Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 12, 2010 11:12 am We are just beginning to look at updating and extending our fibro home in Sydney, and considering whether to use cladding on the external walls, or to use the polystyrene cladding and render? Any ideas around the difference in costs/difficulty in installation/maintenence etc? We are working on the assumption that the asbestos fibro will all need to be removed. Also, we have a double brick extension at the rear of the house and we are extending that a little further as well...if we choose cladding, does anyone know whether you can clad over brick to maintain a consistent finish? Re: What are the benefits of cladding vs polystyrene and ren 2May 23, 2011 12:09 pm I noticed this got no reply, but I am interested in the same thing. Anyone have any idea on cost? I just purchased an old fibro house and was looking at the options of vinyl cladding (to keep costs down) or blue board and render. Anyone done something similar? Thanks Re: What are the benefits of cladding vs polystyrene and ren 3May 24, 2011 8:34 pm Funny I should get a reply after so long - we are finally in the process of doing the work to our house, and have only this week gotten some quotes for the outside. Polystyrene and render for an average size house came in between $18 and $23K, complete. I also had a quote from the 5 star thermal company which was $5-$6K supply only, but I think would be about the same as the others once complete... Don't know if that helps but that is the way we will probably go... Re: What are the benefits of cladding vs polystyrene and ren 4May 25, 2011 1:42 pm I just got a quote for supply and install of Duratuff Vinyl Weatherboards fitted with 30mm styrene foam and foil insulation to all external wall areas of home & supply and install Duratuff eaves profile vinyl cladding to all eaves areas on home. The quote was $10,900 which seems a lot cheaper than the rendering option! Re: What are the benefits of cladding vs polystyrene and ren 5May 25, 2011 5:20 pm Hi, My first post. I generally read a lot of these posts although have never had any input. I am owner building a house in Melbourne and i too am have been contemplating on which way to go.Fiber cement cladding, Timber cladding, Polystyrene with rendered finish... If i was building the house to sell then i would choose the cheaper options. Asi am building the house for myself then I will be steering towards the more superior products. At the moment the whole upper storey will be cladded with XPS (Extruded Polystyrene) which is far superior compared to the standard Polystyrene EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) which is used by most builders as it is cheap. $10per m2 for 75mm thick cladding screws included. Compared to $33per m2 for the extruded polystyrene. The feature wall which will be Timber cladded will have a 30mm thick Polystyrene behind the Timber cladded and a 22mm cavity. All of the second storey walls will have a 22mm cavity.Fixing cladding directly to frame may be the easy and cheap way for builders but is not good for the house and health of people living there. And the industry is slowly learning. I will be installing the cladding by myself (as it is quite easy to install) I have never done it before but is quite simple if you are a little handy. That will take me one weekend to install correctly. It will cost me $3200 for 75mm thick Extruded polystyrene. $300 for H3 Treading pine 22mm battens (for wall cavity) $4500 for renderers. Therefore for 100m2 of cladding and render it will cost me $8000 and i will have close to a 3 Rating exterior wall (not including the 2.5 R stud installation i will be installing in the inner walls) TS261 - What kind of polystyrene did the 5 star thermal company give you a quote for? what was included and how many meters^2 ? Re: What are the benefits of cladding vs polystyrene and ren 6May 25, 2011 5:26 pm By using Polystyrene which must be sealed with a render based application you are increased the R rating on your're walls. Using cement cladding, vinyl cladding you will be getting 0.5 R material rating compared to 2.4 or so for 75mm polystyrene cladding. Noise with standard cement sheet based cladding will also be an issue and you will need to install sound stop insulation in walls. Re: What are the benefits of cladding vs polystyrene and ren 7Jul 19, 2011 12:05 am Help - I live in a fibro house that is on a hilly street and therefore very open to the elements. The insulation is nil and it is either freezing or a hot box. It has a brick garage below on one side of the house. I've just had a quote for Heble cladding and it is insanely high- way above my budget. I would like to know the fors and against polystyrene. I believe it can be attached to the fibro. Or any other suitable options. Any suggestions or info gratefully accepted. Thanks Re: What are the benefits of cladding vs polystyrene and ren 8Sep 20, 2013 8:20 am jacaranda_20002 Help - I live in a fibro house that is on a hilly street and therefore very open to the elements. Thanks Hi jacaranda try paintbusters wall cladding yellow pages should be around 8 to 9k finished Re: What are the benefits of cladding vs polystyrene and ren 9Sep 20, 2013 4:46 pm Anyone doing this sort of reno or new build should look at the R-values for the individual systems and products as BigO has done. Then work out what the cost/benefit ratio is as in how much is it going to cost me to install either for the whole house or per sq m and then what benefit energy wise you are going to achieve. jacaranda_20002 - get rid of the fibro. Not only will you rid your house of it but then you can also install wall batts as well as your final cladding and also run new wiring in those external walls ( if needed ). BigO you mention: All of the second storey walls will have a 22mm cavity.Fixing cladding directly to frame may be the easy and cheap way for builders but is not good for the house and health of people living there. And the industry is slowly learning. Can you elaborate further on what the house and health implications are as I am in the DA/BA stages and am looking at external cladding applications.
