Yep, I'm the annoying new girl with 100 questions!
We are wanting to renovate and extend a 100 year old brick house in an fairly expensive area of Melbourne (fortunately we bought in before prices got silly). We've only had one roughish price estimate (finger in the air stuff), and it was high. Very high! It was from a builder who does a lot of work in the posher Eastern suburbs. The fact that he casually mentioned that bathrooms cost $25,000 to kit out did alert me to the fact that we aren't as cashed up as his typical clients!
Anyway, it got me thinking: do you reckon builders and tradies might vary their prices depending on the postcode? If so, do you think this could be justified (e.g. because people in more expensive suburbs are fussier and want more expensive finishes?) Or do you think sometimes they just figure that people in those areas are well off and can afford to pay more? By the way, I'm not talking about differences between cities where costs of materials, labour, etc can vary for understandable reasons.
(No offence to any builders here intended!)
