Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 10, 2010 6:43 am Hi Guys We have a single storey double brick calif bungalow in Sydney. We are shortly doing a reno and have finally received consent. One question, in trying to find areas to save some money a builder has suggested moving from double brick to single brick, timber frame and internal gyproc. I am concerned this would be less efficient heating and cooling wise and perhaps noisier. Also, as the esisting house is double brick I think the extention should be the same. What do you think is best, single or double brick ? Cheers Re: Is single brick or double brick best ? 2Apr 10, 2010 6:55 am holo Hi Guys We have a single storey double brick calif bungalow in Sydney. Re: Is single brick or double brick best ? 4Apr 10, 2010 3:29 pm Hi there, Bear in mind I'm biased - I'm a sandgroper (living in Perth!) and so it's very unusual to see anything other than double brick over here. I agree that you should go double brick where you can. It's sturdy, robust, and I *believe* a better insulator. Ed could probably correct me if I'm wrong. I certainly wouldn't be pulling out the existing internal brick to replace it with gyprock. If you're looking to put in new internal walls - gyprock could suffice. Once it's finished and painted nobody would ever know the difference short of knocking on the wall. My 7c (2c + GST + ETS tax). Jas. Well, No, I dont think anyone would suggest doing that But the new walls can be brick venneer without any problem Re: Is single brick or double brick best ? 6Apr 13, 2010 11:53 am If we had the option with our builder, and the finances, we would definitely have gone with double brick. My parents have a double brick home in which they've lived for almost 30 years. Their home remains so much cooler on hot summer days than our fibro home and even the brick veneer home we're renting. I think for insulation purposes alone it would be worth it.
