Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 13, 2007 1:18 pm We are building an alfresco with our house about 5.6 x 5.5 in size. We will have a fireplace in there on the opposite wall to the door from the house. We are tossing up what type of flooring we should put over the concrete?
I like the look of real sandstone or possibly decking(but prob not a good idea if we have a fireplace..... Also hubby does not like the fact that the timber, unless its grooved will hold onto the water if the rain comes in off the sides. What other options have other users used on their alfresco's? Any other ideas? Re: Flooring for our Alfresco Area 2Sep 13, 2007 2:44 pm I want to concrete our alfresco, then put down some nice tiles, or it might just be paved--depending on cost. I would also like to use the 'bistro blinds' (or something like it) around the outside, to keep out the weather. Re: Flooring for our Alfresco Area 3Sep 13, 2007 5:04 pm Well I am challenged with the same dilemma of not knowing what type of application to use in my alfresco and other areas around the house. I just got a quote on decking (which I have 51sqm requirement) and was just quoted $12'500 I nearly fell of my chair.
I am no putting plan b into action so am intersted to hear what other parties have to say about this. Re: Flooring for our Alfresco Area 4Sep 13, 2007 5:19 pm WHAT????????????? I will give you a rough idea on costs, I can tell you know tha the quote you got is frogsheet. To give you an idea pureley on the mercau 70mm decking you are looking at about $2500 just for the deck. Unless the bearers and joists are made of titanium plated oregon, it wont be $12.5k Adrian B Re: Flooring for our Alfresco Area 9Sep 13, 2007 8:58 pm Adrian, do you have RSI from typing that post???????
Thanks there was heaps of info in there. Re: Flooring for our Alfresco Area 11Sep 14, 2007 9:46 am We have gone thru the same thought process as you , Phoenix.
we are planning to have a waterfeature opposite the door instead of the fireplace. Regarding the rain water wetting the sides of the Alfresco I was thinking of flooring to extend a bit short of the alfresco roof coverage... say 50 cm each side to keep it dry and those areas to have flower beds so that the rainwater is still effectively utilised. still unsure of what materials but here are some thoughts Wood-- high maintenance-- oiling/painting, risk of termite?? but beneficial to have bladder tanks under so that the garden can be maintained in summer also, additional water can be piped to the water tank that services the flushing system... Possibly Modwood is a solution Concrete- stamped/paved/stencilled/spray on /polished agg/ etc.. $$$$$$ plus in case to put water tanks under is the expensive in slab water tank system... adds to cost but low maintenance in long term..Less risk of termites Any feedback Homeone??????? Re: Flooring for our Alfresco Area 12Sep 14, 2007 10:02 am Hey vpande, i like the idea of having a water bladder under decking. But what sort of clearance would you require for the water bladder? You might have 100-150mm to play with usually on an alfresco as the concrete is usually lower than that of the house. Is that enough to fit a bladder? Re: Flooring for our Alfresco Area 13Sep 14, 2007 10:27 am Does your biulder do the concrete in alfresco? ours simply comes with a brick pillar and the roof over.. underneath is dirt.
Bladders require about 500 cm clearance and the inslab plastic ones need about 300cm..roughly..You'll get an idea if u google. www.smef.com.au are the ones I was quite impressed with.. they are in Gippsland. They also mentiones that they can put the tanks in paved areas around the house.. I was considering metre wide perimeter concreting if not the alfresco. Hvnt finalised anything. Re: Flooring for our Alfresco Area 14Sep 14, 2007 10:38 am Yes, H*e*n*l*e*y pour the alfresco at the same time as the slab. It is the same quality (smoothness / levels) as the slab. One less thing that we have to organise which is great. We will not have that much clearance (500mm), so back to sq one with a upright tank.... Re: Flooring for our Alfresco Area 15Sep 14, 2007 12:22 pm well thats a saving of at least 2K to have the concrete in Alfresco.. If you have anough space in the yard then it should be ok to get an upright.. other possibility would be to have a slimline masked with some cladding and turning it into waterfeature not sure if that works. My yard is small and i simply dont have the room for additional RWTs hence all the wild imaginations!! Re: Flooring for our Alfresco Area 16Sep 14, 2007 12:36 pm Now that's something i didn't think of. Incorporating the tank into a feature. We were just going to put 2/3 horizontal jarrah features in front of it with ground cover plantings. We can build a fascia in f/c sheet and possibly used stacked stone or something architectural. Have a contact for waterfall/cascade fittings so might be a good idea. Then the water can flow down the stone. Thanks. Our backyard is approx 20m wide and wither side of the alfresco will have about 6m from house to back fenceline. No easements & flat so makes it easier to work with.
