Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 08, 2010 9:46 am I am thinking of having similar flooring for my patio and front porch areas. As there will be an existing concrete base by the builder is it better option to have the area tiled or go with exposed aggregate (same as driveway)? Pavers/Decking are out of question due to cost and height issues. What do u guys suggest? Thanks Re: Patio and Front Porch Flooring 2Apr 08, 2010 11:21 am It depends if you want the contrast or not? The maintenance factor etc We're having laminate timber flooring in our kitchen/dining/lounge and they all open out onto the alfresco - so we were thinking of having tiles out there as a contrast (I love timber decking but we thought it may be over kill on the timber floors!) But then again I have just discovered (after seeing it here on h1) the liquid limestone which you can get to kind of look like pavers/tiles with the convenience of it being like concrete (here is the gallery on the webpage I was looking at http://www.lifestone.com.au/galleries.asp I love the dark driveway!!!) My suggestion isn't really helpful though - because I myself am still undecided! I guess from experience I want something with as little maintenance as possible - so i am swinging towards the liquid limestone for our build or in your case exposed aggregate! Hope that helps! Exposed aggregate (at this stage that's what we want anyway). I've seen it on other houses and we really like it. But I think it needs resealing or something on a regular basis but don't quote me on that. Life is; then you tell yourself a story. Re: Patio and Front Porch Flooring 4Apr 08, 2010 4:48 pm I've been told the same thing - the exposed aggregate needs re-sealing on regular basis – We are going for the aggregate as currently we have pavers and they do need sealing as well especially the lighter colours – they do stain and we have the problem of weeds constantly growing in between them, ants bringing the sand up creating little unsightly mounds everywhere. We are going for the aggregate but will have it polished for the alfresco and portico (entry) for a smoother finish. Thanks If I go by my o/s experience patio (we call it patio accented in the a)has always had tiled floors and preferably natural stone or porcelain tiles the prettier the better although my auntie would never allow me to seat and have a smoke. Well that is my experience Re: Patio and Front Porch Flooring 6Apr 09, 2010 1:33 pm Thanks for all your replies. That makes it 3 for exposed aggregate and 1 for tiles. Hmmm I never knew that we have to get the exposed aggregate sealed. How often does that need to be done and how much am i looking to fork out for it? My entire house is going to be tiled except for the bedrooms which will be carpeted. I was suggested by beaumont to have tiles in the patio so that when we leave our sliding door open in the family (and we have two of them) it will have a flow on effect. I do like the idea. But, will tile show more dirt and need cleaning as compared to exposed? Also as i have light coloured tiles inside the house should i continue the same or go for a bit darker ones in the patios? Any one has pictures i can see. All the magazines i have seen have light ones more like off white, creams etc. It looks good when it is new but i am dreading the sand getting into the grouts and turning black soon Thanks Re: Patio and Front Porch Flooring 7Apr 09, 2010 4:14 pm 2pais How often does that need to be done and how much am i looking to fork out for it? I seen people ask this before and never seen a reply. I'm keen to know as well Life is; then you tell yourself a story. Re: Patio and Front Porch Flooring 8Apr 09, 2010 5:44 pm You don't have to get exposed agg sealed (our driveway isn't), but it can stain if unsealed. As a flooring for a patio or alfresco room, just keep in mind that it can be quite rough - so not nice for bare feet or for little knees. If it was polished as Bagheera suggested, that would be a different thing. Re: Patio and Front Porch Flooring 10Apr 12, 2010 12:48 pm Great thanks Kek. I'll keep that in mind. Maybe we could it seal it once and see what it's like over time. Who did your driveway Kek? Are you happy with it? Life is; then you tell yourself a story. Firstly the ableflex that has been installed needs (manufactures specification) a sealant cap over the top, preventing water draining down between the slab and the… 3 5418 Thanks for the insights, that makes perfect sense, and yeah, I will be leaning on the experience of the excavator operator entirely. 6 11076 If your patio is going to be 35 sqm then that's going to need Council Approval.
