Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 06, 2010 1:18 pm Hi all, A quick thought from members...I am in North West Sydney and got my first electricity bill for the summer. We are a small family (me, my wife and a 15 month old baby). Our house is 33 squares and is ducted air conditioned. My bill for 3 months is $1080. I have never received any electricity bill over $400 even with ducted in a smaller house. All my lighting is energy efficient globes and my television is only used for about an hour a day (LCD). I am lost and origin would not help us understand the increase in bill. Did any of you guys noticed any jump in your bills when you did ducted air conitioning? Any comments/pointer will bemuch appreciated. Mohit Re: Electricity Bill NSW 2Apr 06, 2010 1:27 pm Unfortunately the price is only going to get higher I still live at home with the parents, and they received the bill for summer totaling $950! Thats for a 17sq single storey ducted air conditioned house, with one big a$$ 60" plasma tv that is probably on for 16hrs a day.......... Maybe the tv? LOL Re: Electricity Bill NSW 5Apr 06, 2010 3:55 pm mohit Hi all, Any comments/pointer will bemuch appreciated. Mohit Get them to check the reading again - we had an unusually high bill and it turns out they read the meter wrong. Get them to read it again and it should adjust down if you haven't really been using it. Re: Electricity Bill NSW 6Apr 06, 2010 6:07 pm How does the number of kw/hours you've been billed for compare with bills from your old place? And as joeygbh said, see what the meter reading is and go check it yourself.... $1080 seems excessive, but with heavy usage of refrigerated air con, I'm sure it's possible. Re: Electricity Bill NSW 7Apr 06, 2010 7:46 pm So l just wanted to know. Is it worthwhile getting ducted air con then? We were planning on getting ducted after handover but if the bill is going to be over $1000 per quarter l think l'll have to reconsider Handover date 3rd August 2010 WOOHOO!!! If you are one of those people who in winter put there heater up to 26/28 degrees and in summer put the aircond down to 21 degrees then you will have problems with excessive power usage. However if you have zoning and get a consetive unit that perhaps only does half the house with zoning and have you west windows shaded then I dont think you should see you electricity more than 150 to 200 more than usuall. Also depends on how big your house is and how it is designed. Re: Electricity Bill NSW 9Apr 06, 2010 9:32 pm We received a huge bill too. Over twice as much as we've ever had before. We do have ducted air, but can't run it after 10/11pm because of council regulations. We also have a pool, but it has a brand new pump, which is meant to be more energy efficient. We're on that new time-of-day meter, which was not supposed to increase your bill. Yeah right. Another money-making spin. Hate to think what the bill will be once the rises happen. We'll end up like the US, where $600 monthly bills are pretty common. State government sucks. Judie Re: Electricity Bill NSW 10Apr 06, 2010 10:16 pm That seems crazy, I would definitely get it checked again. We are running a couple of split systems in our new house and our electricity account went up by approx $100 for the whole summer, so I was pleased with that especially as I would run them all night sometimes. Re: Electricity Bill NSW 11Apr 06, 2010 10:25 pm This has been happening to so many people I know. My sister just got a bill over $1000... and here I was whinging about my $400 bill!!! It makes me sick to think what our electricity bill will be like once we've moved into our new place with ducted air con and downlights! I would definitely ring the company up and question the meter reading.... although, prices have gone up. it stinks. Re: Electricity Bill NSW 14Apr 07, 2010 8:43 am Is this going to happen in VIC too? Because we've seen some increases in our bill when we moved, but nothing like what you've said and we've got over a 100 down lights and very few batten lights in our place. Then again, I'm a power nazi at home, turning everything off at the switch when I don't need it. Re: Electricity Bill NSW 15Apr 12, 2010 9:31 am I have 4 zones for the aircon. running temp for summers was never below 23 degrees. The Aircon was used for about 4-6 hours a day and probably less tahn 3 time the whole night. I do not have a pool and the only TV I have is an LCD (which is way better than plasma in terms of elec usage). My earlier provider was Jackgreen. They got bust in December last year. so stuck with origin. I have changed providers for next quater for a disc of 7%, if you pay on time. As for my 3 phase meters. they run like Makybe diva everyday...I have asked them to come and have a look at the meters, they might be faulty... But as of now, I still ahve to cough up this money... Re: Electricity Bill NSW 16Apr 12, 2010 12:10 pm given all the information you have provided there is a possibility that you may have been underbilled on your last estimate readying. (with the process perhaps of different companies) . However you aircond sounds like it was used a fair bit and 23 degrees is low. Re: Electricity Bill NSW 17Apr 12, 2010 7:36 pm Get yourself an energy meter, places like neco and energy matters sell them. you will need to get an electrician to install the clip on meter and the diplay is normally wireless so can go anywhere in the house. This will help you verify if there is a fault in your providers meter. I would also start logging the meter reading on a daily basis, only takes a couple of minutes to do, be sure to do it at the same time each day. It will also help you identify where your electricity is being used, you can turn off appliances one at a time and see how much your consumption drops. This could help identify faulty appliances such as a fridge that is not running correctly or a/c faults etc. You don't say what type of hot water system you have? Hot water can account for up to 37% of your bill, heating and cooling 22% Your a/c might be undersized or faulty causing it to run excessively, it could also be something like a timer causing it to run when it should be off. My inlaws ac used to come on at 2am and go off at 4am because someone played with the timer...all year round...do you have large expanses of west facing windows that catch the afternoon sun? Do you close all the windows, doors and blinds when you run the ac? Is your house well insulated? Andy Re: Electricity Bill NSW 18Apr 13, 2010 12:00 pm As a comparison, I just got my power bill for the Jan - Mar quarter. $388 30 square single level home, 18.5 kw ducted air which we used about a dozen times during the quarter. A washing machine that goes almost non . stop ( We have 2 yo twins). Our hot water and cooktop is on gas Re: Electricity Bill NSW 19Apr 13, 2010 12:31 pm Integral has a neat energy calculator on their website. Give it a try to see what should be your typical kWh usage. See link: http://www.integral.com.au/cfmx/calcula ... lator.html Re: Electricity Bill NSW 20Apr 13, 2010 12:41 pm Our bill has not been under $700 since we moved in we are also on that smart meter thing so I try to put the dishwasher on in the middle of the night, the washing machine is going for 2-3 loads a day & more on the weekend but I always try to wash in the off peak or put a load on to wash in the middle of the night. We have ducted air which is on when we need it & fans in all the bedrooms & in summer they were on all night. We also have a lot of computers running 24/7. There was a article in the Daily Telegraph about the cost comparison between NSW & the other states, NSW was the most expensive by a huge amount. Will try & find the link.
