Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 05, 2010 2:23 pm We will be putting our house on the market soon, and think with the current market it probably won't be there long. We have a 4 year old DS who attends kinder, when we move we will be moving to my mums home about 20 minutes away (30 in peak hour) and DS will still be attending kinder here. We will be building a home in a suburb which is about 30 minutes away from my mums home and DS will be heading to primary school next year. I don't know if I should enrol him in a primary school in my mums area (there are actually no primary schools in my mums suburb) or in the one on the estate where we will be building our new home, we are close to deciding on a home so as soon as our house is sold we will be able to start building, but until who knows how long a build can take? Stuff can happen and i'm not looking forward to a long commute every day but I also don't want to uproot him too much. What have others done if you've been in this situation? Re: Moving house and changing primary schools? Or not.... 3Apr 06, 2010 10:33 am HI building1... My opinion would be to enroll your child in the school that they will stay in (i.e closer to your new home). I don't have children nor was I ever moved around to different schools growing up, however my brother was and also my father was... both have said to me how they found it hard to make friends, settle in, and they both feel that it pushed back their social skills to a certain degree as they were always the "new kid". I think back to my school days and I think I would have hated moving schools. Like I said... I don't have experience on this situation but that would be my opinion and if I were in your situation I would do the same... hope that helps Sleven Moved into our Atlantique MkII 36 by Carlisle Homes Re: Moving house and changing primary schools? Our thinking was that she would be sad enough about going to school without any of her preschool friends that we didnt want to do that to her again 6mths down the track. At the moment we are all living 45 mins from where it is but we work about 20 mins away so not too bad. Just to explain that a bit better, we drive 45 mins to school in the morning then drive another 20 to work. In the afternoon my MIL who we live with picks her up and takes her home. We havent even started building yet so we have at least another 4 months of this but once we move in the school is about a 2 min walk from home. Looking forward to those sleep ins. She loves her new school and we are getting to meet other parents in the area too. Although the commute was a bit of a pain, it helped a lot when we moved into the new home as he was established. By the time we had moved in, he knew the area and had friends in the area. Or not.... 8Apr 06, 2010 12:50 pm We enrolled our two boys in the schools near where we are building, one to start kinder and one to start primary school. It is only 15 minutes away but when you have to do two separate drop offs and pick ups it adds up. The primary school son has completely forgotten about his kinder friends but we still catch up with some of them occasionally. The best thing for us though is we now have very good excuses to see what is happening at our building site, we are getting to know our future neighbors already and we are already starting to feel a part of the new community. I would highly recommend starting them near your new house. View our blog at: http://room4acubby.blogspot.com/ Re: Moving house and changing primary schools? Initially it involves a 25minute trip each way, but it will be worth it in the long run to have the kids start the new year at a new school. Sam and Stu Re: Moving house and changing primary schools? Or not.... 10Apr 08, 2010 5:48 pm Building1, I spent the first term of this school year taking my children to school in the area that the new house was being built. It was a 35-40 minute trip to the area, but I took the children to 2 schools, primary and secondary, so it was actually a 2 hour round trip for me every morning and afternoon. It was worth it, because now my children know others in the area and it's been far easier to make the transition than starting at a new school and moving at the same time. My youngest was sad that he wouldn't see the kinder kids anymore, but just as happy to make new friends in prep. The only downside would be the cost of petrol. I was filling up every second day. I agree with what you say about country school children. And it may be an inconvenience for a while, but you'll reap the benefits of it later. Wishing you all the best! Re: Moving house and changing primary schools? Or not.... 11Apr 09, 2010 9:10 am I would absolutely start them in the school near your build. Our school principal advised that changing primary school during the first 3 years can be detrimental to a childs long term education. After seeing how our kids have settled into their school I firmly believe this. I would definitely accept a long commute rather than move them. Re: Moving house and changing primary schools? Or not.... 12Apr 09, 2010 10:40 am As our house started building near the end of last year we moved our 2 boys to a school by the new house (25 min drive from current house) so they had a chance to make friends in the new area, and so we were not uprooting them in the middle of the school year. It is a plan that seems to of worked quite well as they really enjoy the new school and have friends at the new school. It also gives us a chance to check on house progress before/after school. My vote is like most of the others in the thread, put your child in the school near where you are going to live to help make things more stable for them, but at the end of the day you also have to take into account the fuel costs and the time costs of doing this.
