Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 01, 2010 3:31 pm Hi guys, would appreciate anyone who has some insight into council building approvals. I have a large space above my double garage which I am thinking would make a decent sized extra room. We have a townhouse that is part of a block of three. No formal body corporate or rules. However I would not proceed without first getting approval from my two neighbours. FYI, they themselves would not be able to do the same extension as each townhouse is designed differently. Mine being the only one with street frontage. Does anyone have any idea whether the council would approve such an extension ? I live in Malvern, VIC which is under Stonnington Council. Curious to find out if councils have issues with making alterations to Townhouses/Units. Any thoughts / insights would be greatly appreciated. Re: Adding room above garage 2Apr 02, 2010 5:18 pm Hi, although I'm not familiar with your local council, in the first instance, I'd contact the planning area of the council and make a visit to them. They'd have all the info at hand eg height restrictions/zoning regulations etc. By contacting them first off, sitting down to explain your thoughts, they should give you the feedback as to whether your idea is 'do-able'. Altenatively, you could contact an architect or draftsperson in the area that is familiar with the council rules and regs and get their opinion. Hope this helps. Re: Adding room above garage 4Apr 30, 2010 4:12 pm I'm in a similar position (that's why I'm browsing here). I'm in Casey (Vic) and since the garage is right on the boundary, I spoke with council. They seemed to think I would have no issues (not withstanding the current rules about height, next door north windows etc). My garage is dug into a sloping block and it's roof is level with house. Council even had plans, engineering specifications etc for garage after 38 years - whoa, well done Casey. Hey, I am wanting to add a second toilet to my house, bit we have limited room.
