Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 28, 2010 8:47 pm I am desperate for not being able to find someone who can build a front fence that I wanted! I walked pass the street and saw the below front fence and I like it so much. I want something similar but the metal screen fence (what do they call?)between each post should like wood. Has anyone built a front fence without the builder involved at all? Do you normally get someone to handle the whole project or you get someone to do the concrete base, then the brick wall and steel gate and finally render it? How much would that normally cost you? The frontage is 15.24m on a level block. Re: Front Fence - Where to start? Where to get a quote 4Mar 31, 2010 10:09 am We have just signed up with a local landscaper who is going to do our front wall, side wall, decking and all our paving. We have paid the deposit and as soon as we have handover he will start. Our builder's prices were way too expensive to consider getting them to do it. (Based on the charges we were quoted on other things, we didn't even bother getting them to quote on this big job ... plus our builders are one of the slowest around, and we wanted this done quickly and correctly the first time ) Our landscaper is organising all the council applications too. Good Luck ... Re: Front Fence - Where to start? Where to get a quote 5Mar 31, 2010 12:09 pm borepig I just got a quote from someone with something similar cost over 10k??? My goodness. Is it reasonable?? unfortunately yes we paid over $15k for ours, it is similar to the one you like except that the pillars were brick not rendered, and instead of the wood in between we have vertical steel rods. there is a thread around on it somewhere called 'the story of a front fence' if you feel like searching for it. The steel might have factored in a bit of the extra cost in ours, I imagine wood would be cheaper, and we also have an automated front gate; we didnt have to pay for the motor itself, but the electrician's cost is factored into the above. i started trying to organise it all myself, but what with the permits from council and arranging all the different trades, i found it was easier and quicker to have a builder do it all. very happy with the result though, and although it was way above budget i don't regret getting it good luck! Where to get a quote 6Mar 31, 2010 8:49 pm Well, I don't think I need council approval to do this as its part of the landscaping plan. I still could not figure out why it is so expensive. Would it be cheaper if you organise things youself? (I know i can get 1,000 bricks for like about $600 dollars) For ours, its 12k with auto sliding gate. Almost the same cost as a brand new car...Was it worth it? Re: Front Fence - Where to start? Where to get a quote 8Mar 31, 2010 9:12 pm borepig Well, I don't think I need council approval to do this as its part of the landscaping plan. oh ok, ours was a knockdown/rebuild in an already established area, and we needed a permit for anything 1.5m or higher made of brick. Probably different for you, which is good borepig I still could not figure out why it is so expensive. Would it be cheaper if you organise things youself? (I know i can get 1,000 bricks for like about $600 dollars) yes, I think it would be easier if youorganised things yourself, i am sure there was a sizable builders fee incorporated into our price. although, we did already have our own bricks also. borepig For ours, its 12k with auto sliding gate. Almost the same cost as a brand new car...Was it worth it? for us, yes it was. but everone's needs are different. you have to consider your own priorities and needs. For us: * we live at the top of a t-intersection and feel a lot less vulnerable now from the cars heading straight for our front door! * we have 2 small kids and it's great being able to open up the whole house and let them run about as they wish without worrying about them nicking off (or getting taken ) * (to a lesser extent) it looks bl00dy brilliant and really finishes off our house IMO "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." β Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house.
