Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 27, 2010 12:07 pm I've started looking into getting our phone and internet connected. And I am thoroughly confused. As I haven't looked at phone and internet for a fair while, I have absolutely no idea what VOIP, ADSL2 or Naked DSL is. Before we moved back home for the build, we were on a Broadband Plan with our Home Phone, and it had a 10GB useage with free calls (to everything except international, including mobiles which is important as I do FIFO and Mr Smith stays in Perth) for $99/month. I've tried reading up on these terms but I can't really work it out, and what the benefit is over the old stuff. So, can anyone tell me what is the best option? As obviously it's a new house it has nothing, so we're starting from scratch. All I want is 10GB a month, and it would be great to put that in a plan again for $99 that would include all calls including mobiles but not international as we use the phone heaps. What is the best-value option now? I'm sooooo confused... Re: VOIP? ADSL2? Naked DSL? ADSL2? Naked DSL? Have I been in hybernation? 4Mar 27, 2010 4:27 pm Naked DSL is great when you don't use your phone line as you don't pay telephone line fees on a number. The thing I found when they came out was the tended to be almost the same amount more expensive than a similar packaged account with line rental included (with the added disadvantage that you couldn't call your mobile when you lost it to find where in the house it was - I do this a lot ) It's been a while since I looked into accounts so the pricing may have changed... Re: VOIP? ADSL2? Naked DSL? Have I been in hybernation? 5Mar 27, 2010 9:04 pm I'll do my best to explain it. ADSL1/2/2+ are just different versions of the same thing, but faster than each other. In capital cities, ADSL2+ is what you get and in many regional areas, it will only be ADSL1. ADSL1 goes up to a max speed of 8Mbps, but most plans cap it at 1.5Mbps. It's fast enough for average use at 1.5. ADSL2+ speeds go up to around 24Mbps, but the speeds drop of the further you are away from your local telephone exchange. Don't go with telstra/bigpond or optus unless you like spending lots of money for not good reason. VOIP is Voice Over Internet Protocol. Basically, it means that your voice call is converted into data and sent over your internet connection to your ISP, who then puts it onto a normal telephone line to be connected to whomever you are calling. Sounds complicated, but when set up, it just works. And it works well, depending on who your provider is. I've never had a problem with my VOIP calls that haven't been related to something I've done wrong on my end. To do VOIP, you will need a special modem that has a VOIP ATA (Analogue Telephone Adaptor). The ATA is the doohickey that turns your voice call into bits of data to be sent over the internet. Some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) will bundle their broadband and VOIP service into one plan. Mine (TPG) does for an extra 4c per month. That includes 80gb of data downloads and 500mins of free VOIP calls per month for $69.99. Any more than the 500 free minutes and I get billed for it. For example, most of my calls are STD (Cairns to Brisbane) and cost me (outside of the freetime) 10c, day or night for any length. Now, Naked ADSL2+ takes it one step further. It allows you to not pay line rental to telstra anymore. Your phone line is taken over by your ISP instead. So they bundle all you internet and phone together. With naked, your voice calls are all VOIP, incoming and outgoing. You are given a new phone number from your ISP. It is cheaper than paying line rental and having a bundled broadband and VOIP package, but is only available where your chosen ISP has ports or equipment available. Nowdays, ISPs generally have their own telecommunications equipment for ADSL2+ and don't rent it from Telstra, unless they can help it. I'd have no hesitation is recommending naked ADSL2+ to anyone. Or at the very least VOIP. There are other alternatives in the VOIP category, like Skype, who are a service that do VOIP communications that use your computer (mostly, there are more options from Skype, but I won't confuse the situation) using something called a softphone, (software phone) although you can buy phone hardware that plugs into your computer. You pay money to skype to purchase VOIP time, (I don't know if they have plans). Any more questions? I hope that hasn't confused you too much. Re: VOIP? ADSL2? Naked DSL? Have I been in hybernation? 6Mar 27, 2010 9:13 pm Good job Digamma!! digamma Nowdays, ISPs generally have their own telecommunications equipment for ADSL2+ and don't rent it from Telstra, unless they can help it. Telstra don't resell their ADSL 2+ unless there is another ISP/Telco with equipment in the exchange - so for example my exchange (MERNDA) only has Telstra ADSL2+ and no one else has equipment in there so Telstra do no re-sell (wholesale) it and charge a fortune for it! You can still have naked dsl2+ with voip and keep your same number. Just tell your ISP you want the same number when you sign up. ---------------------------------------- Building the PD Lisbon 24 http://www.porterdavis.com.au/#homeviewer/lisbon/24 Blog of our progress. http://lisbon24.blogspot.com/ Homeone build thread https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=28665 Re: VOIP? Note to self: Don't drink coffee when reading posts. Digamma - Thanks for that! It was so helpful! It looks like the best deal we can get is with VOIP packaged or Naked DSL. We'll see what we can get in our area Thank you so much! When I was looking on the web, no one has broken it down simply enough for me to understand Thank you! Re: VOIP? ADSL2? Naked DSL? Have I been in hybernation? 9Mar 28, 2010 12:51 pm I am also very interested in this topic, great info Digamma. A dumb question I know but I assume that you need to leave your modem turned on at all times not the computer itself to be able to make/recieve VOIP calls? Also how does it work with multiple handsets around the home? Are they simply connected to a wireless router? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Re: VOIP? ADSL2? Naked DSL? Have I been in hybernation? 10Mar 28, 2010 2:26 pm Hi guys, for what it's worth, we just signed up with IINET, using their 'BOB' product. This is a VOIP product that gives ADSL speeds, as an all in one modem and the charges are pretty good. Our local exchange is not enabled for Naked DSL, so we still pay line rental. But our total package is line rental plus all local and interstate calls and calls to mobiles at about 30c per minute or about that. We pay $80 per month all up. Comes with a cordless phone and 40Gb downloads per month. Because it's a wireless router, it sends the wireless internet right through the house for laptops etc. It was a real easy installation. Just plug it in and it does it all for you. Cost us $269 to buy the BOB unit outright, but you can rent it as well. The only thing you must be aware of is that if you lose power, you will lose your phone, so you will need a mobile for emergencies. The best part is that when we move to Hornsby, that exchange is enabled for naked DSL so we will save about $30 per month. Happy days! Detail of Bob are at the following link: http://www.iinet.net.au/index.html?utm_ ... rch&247SEM Best of luck. Greg Re: VOIP? ADSL2? Naked DSL? Have I been in hybernation? 11Mar 28, 2010 3:05 pm Hi, Just to add a bit more info here, there are co's out there that can provide VOIP in addition to your current ISP. Yes, you will need to leave your modem turned on permanently as well as your ATA. Or alternativley if your are considering a new modem, models are available with an inbuilt ATA & you can get 2 line models. We currently have a 2 line ATA and have a 2 line Unden cordless phone plugged in. I'm currently with Mynetfone, their website FAQ page is https://www.mynetfone.com.au/support/FAQ Another popular VOIP provider is http://www.pennytel.com.au/Help---FAQ.aspx Just be aware that if you buy hardware from a VSP (Voip Service Provider) if it seem cheap it may be locked to them. Another feature that may be something worth considering, when choosing a DID (phone number) it can be interstate. i.e. We're in Sydney & family all in TAS, we pick a TAS DID & for them to call us it's only a local call from the PSTN (Plain Standard Tel Network) Other features: SMS from PC Follow Me - We have this set up for business, we're out on the road & someone calls the land line it can be programmed to dial from a list of numbers until answered Freebie - if any forum members are interested in trying VOIP, I have Netcomm V-100 ATA (locked to MNF) which is no longer needed & I'm more than happy to post it to you - better off recycled than ending up in landfill! Re: VOIP? ADSL2? Naked DSL? Have I been in hybernation? 12Mar 28, 2010 9:20 pm The wife I am also very interested in this topic, great info Digamma. Yes, you need to leave your modem on all the time for voip. If it is naked adsl, it MUST be on to receive calls (and make them, of course). If you have multiple handsets that need to be plugged in to phone outlets and not just power, then only one handset will be able to be connected to voip. You can get multi handset cordless phones that have only one connection to the phone outlet. Check out uniden to start with. I've got a uniden twin set (has the option of adding more handsets, I'm not sure how many though, but have seen a 3 pack) and it works just great and range is good too. Re: VOIP? ADSL2? Naked DSL? Have I been in hybernation? 13Mar 29, 2010 4:18 pm Well, I work for Primus Telecom, so I can at least tell you your options if you go with them! You can check whether you can get Primus ADSL2+ by going to www.primus.com.au and entering your phone number in to their service checker. (If the result says ADSL2+ EXTRA/ADSL, rather than saying just ADSL2+ then go with a different provider). If you can get ADSL2+ with Primus telecom, these are your three options... HomeChoice49 home phone plan, which is $49 per month, and includes line rental + $49 of included local, national, international and mobile calls. For broadband, ADSL2+ Family 40GB (20GB Peak/20GB Off Peak) for $39.95. That would be $88.95 per month. After being signed up for a couple of months of being with Primus, you will become eligible for "Primus Max". It is $99 per month, and includes free local, national, international and mobile calls on ADSL2+ speeds, with a 21GB Data allowance. Or there is Naked DSL 21GB (7GB Peak/14GB Off Peak) $59.95 + $9.95 VOIP. That is $69.90 per month, with 10c local and national calls. Mobile calls 26c/min. Can I change easily from one Primus plan to another? Is that a permanent plan too? Or just something to get people to switch? Re: VOIP? ADSL2? Naked DSL? Have I been in hybernation? 16Mar 30, 2010 5:23 pm Yes, you can easily switch between plans, even while in contract. You can't sign up with Primus on the Max plan, as it is only available for existing customers, but if you sign up for a different plan, you can then change to Max within the first couple of months. Before signing up, make sure you check that you can get ADSL2+ on the Primus website service checker. If you cannot get ADSL2+ plans, Max will not be available to you.
