Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 22, 2010 9:05 am hi, while i was preparing a hole for the plant, I found a small hole ( about half thumb length) in the pipe in the ground. I'm not sure if it's by the mattlock while i'm digging the hole or it existed before. i've not touched that area b4. I think this pipe diverts the water from downpipe to the front and it is just less than 100mm from the ground ( half of the metal part of my trowel ). What should I do? Replace the broken section or use something to mend it? Really a bit anxious, some mud already fell into the hole and hope. Could I still plant something in that patch if the pipe is so close to the ground? thanks v much Re: A hole in the stormwater pipe 2Mar 22, 2010 9:58 am Your local hardware store will be able to give you the best advice. If the hole is at the very top of the pipe - I would not be too concerned. Just patch it with a bit of pipe offcut and silicone the patch in place. If the hole is on the side or closer to the bottom - then it could pose more of a problem. I would get the hacksaw out and cut out the damaged section, then head down to the hardware store to see if they can advise on a small replacement piece or repair kit (maybe an extension joint would do the job). Good luck. Re: A hole in the stormwater pipe 3Mar 22, 2010 10:12 am A 90mm joiner cut and repair as normal or a neat offcut and cut the side so you can open it up and slide it over the hole... once on the pipe add some blue/green(green is less toxic) glue and slide over the repair site, tape it until the glue dries. then remove the tape Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: A hole in the stormwater pipe 5Mar 22, 2010 5:09 pm 100mm is a ridiculous depth for stormwater pipes. We have one section at about the same depth in the back yard. I thought it must have been a ** job by the plumber, but I found some info online that suggests that where there's no vehicle access, 100mm is the minimum depth. As you discovered, it's all too easy to puncture the pipe with a shovel or pick while gardening. What are you planting nearby? Grasses and groundcovers wouldn't be likely to be an issue, but I wouldn't go putting in big trees. Re: A hole in the stormwater pipe 6Mar 22, 2010 5:56 pm kek, i guess the actual depth is less than 100mm. maybe i should really try to measure it. i'm going to plant some ground covers in. Tree?! Did u read my post in another thread ? I'm still wandering if I should buy one and change the dwarf one to another place. If i've a tree, still it will not be near the pipe. Re: A hole in the stormwater pipe 7Apr 02, 2010 4:49 pm Just cut a small section of pipe. Cut a section from the length of it. Then slap a heap of retic or plumbing solvent on the inside of it and a heap on the pipe around the hole. Then pull the "fix it patch bit" apart and stick it over the hole in the pipe you have. Do digging then All fixed It will be like using a bit of good pipe to make a patch for the one with a hole A band-aid. Re: A hole in the stormwater pipe 8Apr 04, 2010 10:23 am expose the damaged pipe. cut out the damaged section (about 300mm of pipe)with a hacksaw. Buy two (90mm) plumquicks from a plumbing supplier. (plumbquicks are rubber repair couplings with utilux clips on the ends that tighten into position) the rubber is garanteed to never perish and is approved by all relevant authorities) push on on one end of the downstream pipe. fit the other on the upstream pipe. Push them all the way onto the pipe until they are level with the ends of the pipe. Measure the exact length of the missing pipe, cut a piece of pipe the same length. sit it in position between the two ends of pipe and then push the two plumbquicks back so they cover half of the new pipe and half of the old pipe and tighten them into position. You dont need glue. Re: A hole in the stormwater pipe 9Apr 04, 2010 12:39 pm Hmmm.......those plumquick gadgets sound fantastic I could have saved many hours work if I had some a few weeks ago. Anyway, I'd love to have a couple on hand for the next time I need to repair u/g stormwater pipes. But I can't find anything about them on the net. Do you know if they are available from plumbing suppliers across Oz. Do you have any links to info about them? Cheers zeke Re: A hole in the stormwater pipe 10Apr 04, 2010 8:50 pm http://www.fernco.com.au/products/fernco-plumbqwik-couplings Heres a link. They are available in all pipe sizes to suite most pipe types....PVC to copper. PVC to PVC and PVC to earthenware. For repairs to fixed position pipe installations they are unbeatable. You can buy them from any plumbing supplier. Re: A hole in the stormwater pipe 11Apr 04, 2010 9:23 pm Thanks vvs. I couldn't find them as I tried every spelling version of "plumbqwik" except the right one. Looks like a lifesaver - must get a couple of 90mm ones on Tuesday. I WILL need them sooner or later. EVERYTIME we do any trenching on this property (which is pretty often ATM) we prang something. I've become a reluctant expert at repairing agricultural poly pipes and I now keep a range of joiners for these on hand.
