Re: Facing Direction of your House 2Mar 18, 2010 1:57 pm tempura - I figure you will have an equal number of directional perspectives. However, if you are talking about using solar gain to passively heat your home the front door direction is not important. The direction of the light entry into a living area IS very important, also bedrooms and garage need to be considered to best utilise 'free' solar gain and reduce unwanted heat gain etc. Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Well, if we are going to purchase one out of so many block of lands, I think we can choose. Let me know if i'm wrong. Of course you can choose. I never meant that at all, sorry if I was misunderstood, not at all. I didn't realise you were buying a block, I must have missed that part. I was just considering that if you buy a block in a street or you knock down and rebuild then I guess you can usually only place your house one way on the block, such as we did. I would have liked our house facing a different way but it could only go one way. If you are lucky enough to be buying a block from a choice of many then it would be a different situation altogether of course. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Facing Direction of your House 14Mar 18, 2010 5:54 pm Choosing the block is only part of the equation. If you haven't already chosen a house design, you need to be prepared to put in some work finding "the one" (or have one custom designed to suit). Our block faces east with the master BR at the front, and most of our living areas are on the north side, as well as our alfresco room. Kids' rooms are on the south and bathroom and rumpus room face west. The rumpus room siting isn't ideal, but we'll be building a pergola for shade, as well as planting as densely as we can along the fence line. We already knew which house we were building and spent quite some time finding a block that was big enough, the right shape, faced the right way, and suited us in all other aspects (e.g. not on a corner, not on a main road, no bus route going by, no noisy schools nearby, etc, etc). It's a lot harder than you might think.... Re: Facing Direction of your House 15Mar 18, 2010 7:19 pm kek Choosing the block is only part of the equation. I agree, the front of our block as in the bit that runs parallel to the road is south west, so our house kinda sits diagonally on our block, made fitting everything in facing North a PITA but we have ocean views to inspire us ____________________________ Bec ____________________________ Building our Balinese Resort Inspired Dream Home Blog ~ http://hagarshouse.blogspot.com/ Re: Facing Direction of your House 16Mar 18, 2010 7:39 pm Hi tempura, We chose our block for the directional aspect and built the house to suit. The front faces South/East and the rear faces North/West. All our living areas are at the rear of the house for the warming winter sun as we live in SA. Our bedroom is in the middle on the west side of the house away from the road noise and to keep it cool in summer as it will only get the morning sun. All other bedrooms are on the east side which we will have all our rainwater tanks to help keep the sun and heat out in summer. We are yet to move in and see how this works. This is our forth build and three of our houses have had the rear of the house facing north. Twice we had our main bedroom facing north and I must say it was damm hot in summer but toasty warm in winter. I don't like a hot bedroom in Summer therefore never having our main bedroom facing north again. No feng shui involved in building/positioning our house. PCI Done Re: Facing Direction of your House 17Mar 18, 2010 8:30 pm There's no simple answer to the question which direction is best? Some obvious variants - 1.Location - ie as someone has said in Cairns you might not want to maximise light and warmth into house 2. Floorplan - eg it is often said faceing west is bad - however if you have a narrow house with only one bedroom at the front (very common) that might be Ok. Facing south may also be good as this means liveing areas at the rear can open to a north facing back yard - as some posters have mentioned. Our house faces North - we have 2 windows at front - House is sort of an L shape, there are no windows faceing south at all. Both minor bedrooms and large sliding doors from family room face east, these open to the alfresco area - this is fine, our location is hot and dry so the morning sun is good. The thing to really avoid IMO is large windows/sliding doors faceing west, or an alfresco area faceing west. Re: Facing Direction of your House 18Mar 18, 2010 10:00 pm West and East are hard to shade from the heat due to the low angle of the sun. You can't do it without also blocking light or having very deep eaves. Too many windows on those sides can easily result in overheating of the building. North is easiest to shade because of the higher angle of sun particularly in summer. You can get natural light but not direct heat with properly sized eaves. As long as your house can get solar access to the north i.e. no obstruction or overshadowing then you will have much more control over the heat load on your house. Re: Facing Direction of your House 19Mar 19, 2010 8:59 am I understand that it is not possible to have all aspects of the house to face North. Within the house, which part of it that you considered best to face the North? Many say Living Room ... but i was just thinking if you have the Living Room facing North then there's a possibility that the main entrance of the house face West. Re: Facing Direction of your House 20Mar 19, 2010 11:39 am With adequate eaves, the north side has the most stable temperature throughout the day and over the year. The east and west tend to be get much hotter than the rest of the house at the ends of the day. The south side tends to be the coldest. North - living areas, study South - bedrooms West/East - laundry, bath, storage, garage Assuming you've modelled the TB8, TB10, TB12, TB2 & J1 joists/LVLs there, it appears as per drawing to me.
