So bloody ugly, does anyone have something different to the square boxy ones?? ____________________________ Bec ____________________________ Building our Balinese Resort Inspired Dream Home Blog ~ http://hagarshouse.blogspot.com/ Re: Do you have to have gutters?? 2Mar 17, 2010 10:56 pm In Port Hedland (North WA) you generally don't get gutters on the houses, but i don't think i've ever seen a house built here without them! What is it that you don't like about them? I barely notice them myself! viewtopic.php?f=31&t=22766 - my build thread! Time waits for no man. Unless that man is Chuck Norris. Re: Do you have to have gutters?? 3Mar 17, 2010 10:59 pm Gutters are used to direct water from your roof. Water left standing on your roof can lead to structural damage and leaks into your home’s interior. They alos help prevent water logging around your house causing mud baths. I agree they are ugly. You can get them built it the eaves or have them hidden but doing this can add alot of extra cost for your home. No one cares if they can see gutters on a house. Yep I know what they do and are for, I just wanted to know if it was a building regulation that you MUST have them and if anyone has something beside the stock standed square look. Dollar No one cares if they can see gutters on a house. But I care that's why I'm asking, aesthetically the good old box gutter just isn't going to look right on my house so trying to find alternatives. I barely notice them myself! I can't really explain why, I just don't & as I said square ones are really not going to suit my house, I have seen some up in Nth QLD that are like a 1/2 pipe so that may be an option ____________________________ Bec ____________________________ Building our Balinese Resort Inspired Dream Home Blog ~ http://hagarshouse.blogspot.com/ Re: Do you have to have gutters?? 5Mar 18, 2010 12:19 am I once built a roof over a very large balcony in a high rainfall area in the Adelaide Hills. When i was getting initial quotes, a universal comment was "well, you have to have gutters". When i asked "why" I was treated to some very condescending and simplistic explanations along the lines of "the water will all fall across the driveway". So I pointed out that the proposed roof exactly covered the 50+ sq metres of balcony which had been there for 15 years plus, happily discharging any rain that fell on it onto said driveway. If you're happy to deal with the water run-off from your roof without gutters and are confident it can be drained away without getting the opportunity to damage your foundations, and if you have no desire to harvest rain-water and if the applicable building codes, estate covenants and council regs don't require gutters, then, obviously you don't need to have them. Certainly a different look - I wouldn't go for it for the whole house, but it suited the balcony roof I had designed. One idea that sprang to mind reading this question is a house i saw once with a sort of moat around it and "bridges" at the entrances. Also a fashion of a few decades ago of using chains for the water to run down instead of downpipes (this still required gutters, though). Cheers zeke Re: Do you have to have gutters?? 6Mar 18, 2010 9:04 am What about going with hidden gutters? But it'll cost alot more for the design and if your house is quite contemporary then the hidden gutter system can look awesome. As for regulations I have no idea. I wouldn't build a house without gutters as they serve a purpose. Re: Do you have to have gutters?? 7Mar 18, 2010 9:12 am As with most of these things, I'd suggest you ring your council. I know that we are allowed to only have about 5 sq metres or so of roof that doesn't have gutters, so for example, we don't need them on our portico, but on the rest of the roof we do. It's to control the amount of run off. Once you know for sure if you do or don't need them, then try going to roofing companies to see what they can offer you that might suit your aesthetic requirements. Re: Do you have to have gutters?? 9Mar 18, 2010 10:58 am I guess it is up to your council. Here in Nth Qld there are a lot of newer houses being built without them. http://www.designcentrenq.com.au/Portfolio/built.html Dunno if i am allowed to post that, but in thier project list there are a couple of pics houses that they have done without gutters. I reckon it looks good.
