Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 02, 2007 1:56 pm We have timber french doors in our master room leading to the balcony.
At the moment, it's just clear glazed. We have the option to put in translucent glazing without charge. But hubby is keen on putting tint on it instead. Which do you think is better: leave it clear, translucent, tint? And, if we put either translucent or tint, do we still need to put in blinds, shutters or curtains? We're planning to use plantation shutters to all windows downstairs. Would greatly appreciate your suggestions. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: French doors to balcony... what to cover them? 2Nov 02, 2007 2:22 pm VJ, i dont think i've seen french doors with translucent glazing?
i would say keep them clear and use window covering for privacy when you need it. Translucent glass defeats the purpose of having french doors. It might as well be a window then, just for filtered light to come through. They will look wonderful in clear glass, especially if you have other windows in the room to compliment them. It is personal choice, but i'd stay with clear. In regards tot he tint. You would have to tint all windows on the front facade to blend it in so that it does not stand out so much. Re: French doors to balcony... what to cover them? 3Nov 03, 2007 1:14 am Which direction are they facing? E W N S ?
Personally I would not go with translucent - It's really nice to wake up and see the sun and the trees of the wind and the rain. Not just moving images of what it might be like. tineted - hmm maybe - but alight tint - but definiatly curtains - heavy to keep the outside light out when it's daytime (we all get sick sometimes) and then when you wake up - open the curtains - and viola - it's time to enjoy a sleep in or get up and at em. FYI I have 16 square metres of glass in my bedroom and love to wake up to the sun every morning with no curtains at all. Trust this helps. IF, I get time this weekend, I will be making a set of curtains to fit into the frame of BOTH doors, (window section only) This way the bulk of the timber is still showing, but I get privacy from curtains, which I pull back through the day with the large tassels. I personally think distorting the glass in any way will detract from the doors themselves. You can also have small Roller Blinds made to fit & Roman Blinds, in fact there are a lot of window dressings out there that can be made to size. Thanks for all your responses. We feel better now that we didn't ask our builder to put translucent glazing on it. We panicked 2 nights ago when we were reviewing our plans and realised that we didn't ask for translucent glazing to our french timber doors! We thought that we might have forgotten about it and just asked for the internal timber doors (pantry and home theatre sliding doors) to have translucent glazing. After reading your reponses, realised that we really wanted to have clear glazing in the first place and just put in blinds or curtains to have some privacy. Quote: Which direction are they facing? E W N S ? Steve, our balcony (master bed) is facing south and all our living areas are facing north (at the back). Thanks again for your feedback.. greatly appreciate it ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: French doors to balcony... what to cover them? 9Nov 04, 2007 10:36 am If facing south - I'd go with double glazed so at least you can enjoy the view without having to close the curtains.
Bedrooms are really nice to have natural light in them in the mornings and Not be shivering. Good luck with it all. Steve Re: French doors to balcony... what to cover them? 10Nov 04, 2007 2:27 pm VJ
If you want timber make sure you get 21st century joinery with the 21st century hardware and double glazing One of the most advanced timber joinery manufacturer in Australia is not far from you Paarhammer Pty Ltd 11 Smallmans Road Po Box 26, Ballan, Vic. 3342 tel: (03) 5368 1999 fax: (03) 5368 1993 email: mail@paarhammer.com.au url: www.paarhammer.com.au Maybe too late now but your builder should have known Re: French doors to balcony... what to cover them? 11Nov 04, 2007 6:49 pm Steve and Windowexpert,
I checked the plans... timber windows to the front of the house (facing South) are not double glazed. The ones at the side and rear (aluminum) are all double glazed. If only we could still change all our timber windows/french doors to be double glazed, we would do it. We already signed the contract, and from time to time do some changes to our roof, paint colours, etc. without being charged for variation fee. Probably worth a try to ask our builder tomorrow Do you have an idea how much would it cost to make it double glazed in lieu of single glazed? Windowexpert, I don't think our builder uses Paarhammer windows. We didn't see that supplier name in our list of suppliers. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: French doors to balcony... what to cover them? 12Nov 04, 2007 7:01 pm Met-con uses Southern Star windows.
If you want the translucent windows maybe you could look at the double roller blinds I have recently found on iseekblinds - then you can have the sunblind down which means people can't see in during the day (as long as the light isn't inside), yet you can see out (depending on the thickness). I agree that it would spoil them if they were frosted or tinted. We got the sikkens doors inside with translucent - but that's for the master bedroom and between the entry and kitchen - not where you would want to be looking through anyway. ~Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: French doors to balcony... what to cover them? 13Nov 04, 2007 9:24 pm Hmm - VJ - Parhammer are very nice windows and I'd suggest not within the project builders "price list" Hence not there.
If you have double glazing elsewhere - then my suggestion for a south facing window - in your bedroom - it's even more important. I had a south facing bedroom in my last place and it was a hell of a lot colder than the rooms on the other side of the house. See how much it will cost and make a compromise somewhere else - or be ready to install them at your own cost after handover and sell the "new" single glazed ones on ebay to cover the diff in costs. I checked Parhammer's website... their windows are really good! double glazed, triple glazed... We might try asking our builder whether we could still do double glazing to all our front timber windows/french doors. They are quite accommodating even after contract had been signed. Should have done more research prior to contract signing... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping!
