Re: Has anyone moved in without floor coverings yet? 5Dec 10, 2008 6:39 am We've held off moving for exactly that reason. The floorboards are done and the carpet goes in tomorrow, THEN we're moving.
No way were we: a) living on concrete floors with all the dust (5 out of 5 of us have asthma anyway, so bad idea....); or b) moving furniture in and out of rooms multiple times. One move is one too many.... A few years back when we renovated, we got the carpet layers to install our new carpets over two separate days, so that we had somewhere to put the furniture (it was a small house), and also so that we could paint rooms before the carpet went in. I think it only cost us an extra $40 or so to make it two trips for the carpet guy instead of one. I don't know if that would help you at all, or if your carpet mob will do it. Have you booked them in yet? Re: Has anyone moved in without floor coverings yet? 6Dec 10, 2008 7:09 am Hi VJ
I think you probably need to make a decision one way or another this week. Christmas is an emotional time at the best of times and you dont want the extra stress of should we, should we not etc My feeling is to wait and enjoy your christmas break where you are now. It really is a matter of only 2-3 weeks more. Put it this way...If you had to decide to move in before the end of July or wait a few extra weeks, you would probably wait the extra weeks. Once we knew that our house will not be ready before christmas, a heavy weight lifted and I could finally settle down in the rental for the christmas season, put up the tree, start buying gifts etc Dont rush things right at the end, you have been so particular right up to this stage and hopefully have a quality build, due to your insistence that it is done properly. This is a credit to you Mrs B Re: Has anyone moved in without floor coverings yet? 7Dec 10, 2008 7:38 am Hi VJ,
As much as you want to move into your lovely new home my advice is "Don't Do It!" I was at our house last night with five kids.........the dust was incredible and Master 4yo's clothes were almost white by the time we left. Your belongings will be coated in dust, I couldn't think of anything worse Good luck. H2B Re: Has anyone moved in without floor coverings yet? 8Dec 10, 2008 7:47 am While I wouldnt recommend it. If you must have to move in make sure you seal the floors with something to hold the dut down.
You can by some cheap sealer (which is the thickness of water) to roll onto the slab. If you need more detail let me know. I think it will cost 30-50 dollars for about 4 litres. It is very thin and be stretched a fair way. Re: Has anyone moved in without floor coverings yet? 9Dec 10, 2008 1:20 pm Thanks to everyone who responded.
It is so much appreciated... as we are really confused at the moment. Yes, Christmas is an emotional time... and we told ourselves when we started building that we will celebrate our 1st Christmas in our new house this year. With your comments though.. i don't think it's worth it. Ok, we'll patiently wait for the house to be finished.. for the tiler and carpet layer to finish laying the floor coverings... before we move in. Thanks again to everyone here! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Has anyone moved in without floor coverings yet? 10Dec 10, 2008 2:37 pm I've been living in my house the past 6 weeks with no flooring. For me I would do it again but I'm the only person living there. I think it would be alot harder with a whole family. The problem is that anything that comes in contact with the floor will get dirty - the dust comes straight off but it gets to the point where you have to do everything in a certain way to avoid it spreading everywhere. For instance wear slippers until you get to a tiled are and then take them off, leave nothing on the floor, never put your feet up on anything etc. It's very hard to keep things clean. Part of the problem is at handover the floors are filthy so you have to vaccum and then mop them and even still you can't touch them without dust getting on you. The noise travels alot too. As for sealing them I'm not convinced it would be that easy - sounds like a very messy job.
That said I'd do it again because I'd rather a bit of hassle and be living in the house than be paying rent or having to put up with living elsewhere. It also gives you come time to decide what you really want color wise. Re: Has anyone moved in without floor coverings yet? 11Dec 11, 2008 2:54 am Personally I wouldn't move in before floor coverings were laid, I think you're making the right decision by waiting.
Casa2 Make sure you get it in writing that the builder will complete. From what I understand, taking possession ends the contract. No, it doesn't. VJ, you will sign a deficiency list when you take possession, which acknowledges that you may be moving in with items still to be completed, but at the same time it compels the builder to finish off the incomplete items. Re: Has anyone moved in without floor coverings yet? 12Dec 11, 2008 5:06 am If you do need to move in you can minimize the dust by giving the concrete flooring an extra wet, sloppy wash with water and an old fashion string mop. Any other sort of mop won't do the trick. slop on the water. Lots of it. Swish the string mop frequently. Then repeat the procedure a 2nd time. This will get up a lot of the concrete dust. It's a temporary solution but it does work to a large degree. You still get some dust but not too much. Repeat as often as you need to do so while living in thw house.
Usually once a week will be enough. Re: Has anyone moved in without floor coverings yet? 13Dec 11, 2008 10:57 am Personally, I agree with everyone else, and wait until it's all done before moving in if you can.
I have friends that have moved in with no flooring, but this is due to it not being included in their build and running out of money to complete it. However, they used "boncrete" on the floor before they moved in which sealed the concrete (admittedly with a pink tinge) and now they dont get the concrete dust coming off, so if you have to move in, this is one solution. Re: Has anyone moved in without floor coverings yet? 14Dec 11, 2008 1:40 pm Did you mention what floor covering you were getting, not sure but dont seal the concrete if youre getting a covering that requires a glue.
We moved in with no floor covering at all except for wet area tiles. Carpet installation was no problem at all (just emptied the room and gave a quick vac) The other rooms however were being concrete ground and then sealed (pray that you never have to go through that) The dust before grinding was taken care of by using a very powerful hire wet and dry vacuum (see Kennards or Coates hire) Use lots of water with your mop and suck up excess water, and do this before you move in (give 1 full day to dry). This should get rid of about 80% of the dust, but im not sure how this would affect an asthmatic. However if your floor coverings dont involve glueing then you can use an acrylic sealer (from bunnings 10L = about $130 and should cover 100 square meters, very quick to apply with roller and this should take care of the other 20% dust.) You could do all of the above over a weekend and be in for xmas, dust free. Re: Has anyone moved in without floor coverings yet? 15Dec 11, 2008 5:28 pm VJ you should wait until you have floor coverings. The dust from concrete is not good for kids. It is so hard getting them to stay clean, not to mention the dust on your furniture! Maybe you'll be in before 19th? Are you sure that is the last day for tiling and carpet laying? Don't people work up to 24th?
