Re: Tsunami Warning FNQld 5Feb 28, 2010 6:36 am A 20cm tsunami hit New Zealand's eastern Chatham Islands this morning, with bigger waves to follow. Is a 20cm wave classed as a tsunami? Re: Tsunami Warning FNQld 6Feb 28, 2010 7:31 am Oh ****! My poor Nana is still on the cruise throughout New Zealand that my Mum got taken off last week - is that a danger? Being in New Zealand waters with this tsunami? My karma ran over your dogma Re: Tsunami Warning FNQld 7Feb 28, 2010 9:57 am There was a 1.5 - 3 mtr wall of water heading towards the south island. A tsunami would just be a ripple under them. That's why the navy in Hawaii were taking their ships out to deeper water before it struck there. Not sure why there was a cruise ship still in port in Mexico as the tsunami hit there, which can be seen in photos on the CNN website? Seismologist on CNN were saying that there is only one quake a year at magnitude 8, so at 8.8 this is a big one! Prior to this one, Japan experienced one at 7 the same day and overnight Argentina experienced a level 6 (and no according to seismologists it wasn't an aftershock). We live in a very active part of the world I trust that the cruise ship will have contingencies and that Nan will be ok. Why was your Mum taken off the ship? How awful. Re: Tsunami Warning FNQld 10Feb 28, 2010 2:14 pm DH who is currently in Suva for work, rang to say that he & fellow workmates were ferried to the top of the hill/mountain overlooking suva harbour this morning b/c of the tsunami warning . THey saw no change in the water level & were all ferried back down to the harbour. Mum had an epileptic fit (her first ever - we didn't even know she was epileptic) on board and the cruise wouldn't have her back on She is safe at home in Melbourne now Thank goodness your DH is ok Southies My karma ran over your dogma Re: Tsunami Warning FNQld 12Feb 28, 2010 6:53 pm haywgl Rowena I trust that the cruise ship will have contingencies and that Nan will be ok. Mum had an epileptic fit (her first ever - we didn't even know she was epileptic) on board and the cruise wouldn't have her back on She is safe at home in Melbourne now That's just awful. I hope she is feeling better now. I have a family member with Epilepsy and it's really unusual to be diagnosed so late in life. I do hope that she has seen a good neurologist as seizures can manifest from all sorts of conditions. These cruise ships have a lot to answer for in asking people to leave like that - all part of risk management. When I got sick on the cruise (back now a few weeks) I mentioned that I was ill and I was confined to my cabin for 24 hours with no fresh air, making my sea sickness worse! Overall while I enjoyed the experience I can see how they really don't care about the welfare of their passengers. I really hope your Mum is feeling better. Re: Tsunami Warning FNQld 15Mar 01, 2010 7:53 am Thanks for your thoughts everyone - she sees the neurologist on Friday so hopefully we will know more then! That is awful Rowena I wasn't too happy with them shipping Mum off either - they left her in a hospital in New Zealand and took all her luggage/phone/wallet on the boat, luckily she had her passport on her BUt the rest of her luggage is still floating around in NZ somewhere My karma ran over your dogma |
