Ours was mid range in price - about $400 couple of years back, thaws more evenly rather than cooking meat on edges due to some feature which I forget the details of Its a Panasonic 1000W one and does everything we want. Re: No idea on whats a good microwave - what should I look for?? 3Feb 23, 2010 8:48 pm I reckon get one that also has a trim kit available. Looks nice and neat if you get the trim. In saying that, we bought one that isn't available with a trim kit because we wanted one that is silver look but not stainless steel (hate fingerprints). Ours is a Sharp Carousel. DP has one at his mumma's house and it's lasted 20+ years so he was all like, 'it has to be the same as mum's' Here's the one. Nothing fancy. I only use it for reheating, melting butter, defrosting etc- http://www.consumer.org.nz/content/images/products/Microwaves/09jun-microwaves-sharp_R33OJS.220x195.jpg Re: No idea on whats a good microwave - what should I look for?? 4Feb 23, 2010 10:03 pm Hi, A very well known consumer magazine which hates having its name quoted inappropriately tested microwaves and found these ones best (hope this does not fracture copyright): Compact, under $240, tested Feb 2010 Panasonic NN-ST557W Sanyo EMS5597B Mid-size, under $300, tested Apr 2009 Panasonic Inverter NN-ST657W Samsung MW103H LG MS3448GRK Cheers Re: No idea on whats a good microwave - what should I look for?? 5Feb 23, 2010 10:33 pm We've got a sharp carousel 1100W at home and about 6 months ago purchased a 1000W panasonic from my fiances mum, both are good. They cook/defrost everything about the same. The panasonic fits a larger plate than the sharp, but its rare something doesn't fit in the sharp. In terms of user experience, i prefer the sharp as its just key in the time. whereas the panasonic has a separate 10. 1 minutes and seconds buttons. So might be worth considering what your used to using currently and whether you want it to change. Also heard good things from a mate who recently purchased an omega as he preferred the faux s/s finish on it, to some of the others. DH had one for a few years before we married, we have been married 13 years now and it's still going strong with never a problem. So when we recently bought a new one for our new kitchen, I told him to get a Sharp Carousel again. Nothing like the devil you know . Re: No idea on whats a good microwave - what should I look for?? 10Feb 25, 2010 9:45 am I have a Blanco and it's kind of missing a simple feature that I would have thought every microwave would have......like a 1 min express button or a 10 min one, you have to go through the "time" "10.00" "start" ....and it doesn't heat terribly quickly sometimes. Re: No idea on whats a good microwave - what should I look for?? 11Mar 01, 2010 12:14 am Miele has microwave ovens that include a conventional grill and some that are also conventional ovens. They are a bit more pricey, but if you are looking for the extra flexibility that this would give, you might be happy to pay the extra. Re: No idea on whats a good microwave - what should I look for?? 12Mar 01, 2010 7:58 am We have an LG - I think its probably one of the ones mentioned in the post referencing Choice but I'm at work and can't check it... Its prob about 2 years old ish? Its been able to do everything and more I've wanted out of it really well. Has a round cavity at the back which makes cleaning it an absolute breeze, it still looks as brand new as when I bought it. But you also can't go wrong with Carousel's either - I have 2 family members with them, and my last at home was one and it was great Re: No idea on whats a good microwave - what should I look for?? 13Mar 01, 2010 9:42 am One thing that anyone here has not mentioned is an ergonomic aspect. Our flash microwave at home does not have it. The old clunker here at work does. Put a mug of something in the microwave, push time and run it. Our home one stops whenever the time stops. The work one will cut the micro waving and turn the plate until the handle is right back where it started. Each time I put something in the microwave and the spot I need to pick it up from is on the complete other side really makes me want to just shake my head and say why does the $50 unit at work do this and not mine? Just something that makes everyday life a bit easier I guess. You must be new to the internet. You're also the only person anyone here has ever heard of washing their garage wall.
