We replaced our hills hoist with a wall mount only 1m from where the hills hoist was, so they both got the same amount of sun. Wall mounted has far less line space than a hills hoist, less air circulation especially when full so everything took longer to dry than the hills hoist. I could only get 2 loads of washing on the wall mount and 4 loads on the hills hoist. You need to wash daily with a wall mount. Hills hoist means I can wash once or twice a week. I hate washing every day Removeable is great for the kids to have the play space Shade/rain cover shaped tarps for the hills hoist are excellent for outdoor entertaining as well, wall mounted are not usually hung high enough to use as an awning shade. Which brings the next point. Hills hoist can be raised out of dogs/children height. Wall mounted remains there. I'd use a wall mounted unit in the garage as an undercover clothesline but I'd probably still consider a retractable instead though Re: Hills Hoist in plain sight of living areas: yea or nay? 3Feb 15, 2010 9:06 pm I've had both types of clothesline and preferred the hills hoist. We got the removable version so we could get it out of the way if needed. I kind of liked the old fashioned look of seeing the washing spinning around in the breeze drying. I'm definitely putting that type of clothesline in when this house is built plus a fold down in the garage for rainy weather. Re: Hills Hoist in plain sight of living areas: yea or nay? 4Feb 15, 2010 9:12 pm No contest!!! I voted for wall mount, out of view... that's what I actually have too. As if I want to look at my washing all day. Once the landscaping is done I want a view of garden, not socks and undies. I wash everyday, so the clothesline is used everyday. I would find that a little depressing to look at. My 2c So who wants what????? Re: Hills Hoist in plain sight of living areas: yea or nay? 5Feb 15, 2010 9:26 pm I like my wall mount ones - but I agree they are smaller than the traditional Hills hoist style - that's why we have 2 - mounted side by side Of course this only works if you have enough wall space. I take your point that Hills Hoists will dry clothes faster - partly because of the spinning effect and partly because they are getting sun from all sides, no wall to block out one side. However, we live in hot dry area, west coast of SA, so this is not really an issue for us. We dont have little kids so the fact that the wallmount could be a problem with them (when it is in down position and reachable from kids height, ?) is irelevant. We have a dog but she has never been a problem with the clothesline I prefer them out of view too Re: Hills Hoist in plain sight of living areas: yea or nay? 6Feb 15, 2010 9:33 pm Thanks everyone for your inputs! Keep 'em coming! Fernyhouse I hate the hinged wall mounted clotheslines. Have you used one? Yeah we have one currently, it's about 2m long by 2m wide. Nice and low for me (I'm a shortarse) but hubby finds it awkward at 6'4 Interesting point about using a HH as an umbrella! Re: Hills Hoist in plain sight of living areas: yea or nay? 7Feb 15, 2010 10:11 pm I voted against the trend and went for the traditional spinning hills hoist.. we have exactly that in our backyard. Though I was lucky and was able to stick it up the back of the yard next to the water tank. So much better, fits more clothes.. everything dries faster etc. And its removable. I hate fold out ones! Re: Hills Hoist in plain sight of living areas: yea or nay? 8Feb 15, 2010 10:25 pm don't like the fold out ones and Yes I have tried them twice. We have a removable hills. I can't see us moving it though as we were lucky enough to have plenty of room to leave it up permanently and it's around near the laundry and not in sight of the living areas. Re: Hills Hoist in plain sight of living areas: yea or nay? 9Feb 15, 2010 10:31 pm I went for the fold down wall mounted number. We have one at our rental and if I have a massive washing day (read: I was too lazy to do any washing throughout the week ) then I need to stagger the loads so there is enough space for it to hang out. But as there is only two of us and if I'm just doing a few loads then I find there is plenty of space. I like it hiding away from view - I don't want to be looking out my window seeing all the clothes that I don't want to bring in but know I have to - I like living in *forgetting about clothes hung on the clothesline* bliss Re: Hills Hoist in plain sight of living areas: yea or nay? 10Feb 16, 2010 7:48 am Where's the vote for internal, clothes horse? The majority of our washing is dried on two clothes lines that we normally set up in our lounge room or my music room. That way, we are able to hang out the washing and take it off the line whilst listening to music or watching TV. Perhaps this is made possible by having a front load washing machine that spins the clothes at a high speed, reducing substantially the time that clothes need on the line before they are dry. We only use the outside, wall-mounted line for quilts etc. My mother is horrified that we dry our washing inside as it doesn't put it out in the sun where they are apparently made truly clean! In my childhood days, my parents owned a hills hoist that was raised by pumping, with your foot, a hydraulic system. Much more upmarket than a handle to turn! Pfiff Finally making progress again, with a clothesline (yippee) and some much needed little things being attended to over the holidays. 40 C on New Year's eve? We love our a/c! Re: Hills Hoist in plain sight of living areas: yea or nay? 11Feb 16, 2010 8:14 am Hills hoist type anyday. I've had both. The wall mounted line is great if it's in the right position & gets load of sun. A great space saver if that's what you need. However, I prefer having a large line & getting all my washing done quickly over the aesthetics of the issue. Bugger what the yard looks like IMO Besides, how could you not have an OZ icon in your backyard ?? Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Hills Hoist in plain sight of living areas: yea or nay? 12Feb 16, 2010 8:15 am I would choose neither and go for a wall mounted retractable one out of view, which is what we are getting. I dislike the hinged ones and though i like a hills hoist i think you have to have a fairly large back yard for it not to intrude very much; i think i'd prefer that space to have as turf for the kids to run around on. The reality is you probably aren't going to remove it very often... even with our wall retractable one we are getting a removable post for it but realise we aren't going to remove it very often so we're putting it at the very edge of the yard. means more walking from laundry but it means its out of view and not in middle of kids playing area. if its only out of those two though, i would go the HH. Re: Hills Hoist in plain sight of living areas: yea or nay? 13Feb 16, 2010 8:59 am I must say I'm a huge fan of the Hills hoist as it gets a lot of air and sun and is easy to use and takes plenty of clothes. I've never used a wall one but think we may go with one for the new house (site start this week or next). I was thinking of getting this one http://www.qualityclotheslines.net/imagesofadda35.html as it's big enough for sheets. But if we have enough room I'd love the hills hoist. I'll have to wait until we've moved in to determine. At the moment I used the HH and 2 clothes horses for smaller loads or when it's cold outside. Clothes horses are great as you can move them around anywhere you like. Life is; then you tell yourself a story. Re: Hills Hoist in plain sight of living areas: yea or nay? 14Feb 16, 2010 9:07 am I suppose one of my biggest issues is that I don't like drying clothes in full sunlight due to bleaching, synthetic breakdown and elastic/rubber breakdown... with a HH they have to be dried in the sun on sunny days. Re: Hills Hoist in plain sight of living areas: yea or nay? 15Feb 16, 2010 9:58 am Hey - I'm going for the retractable one on the blind side of my house - my hubby's T-Shirts have a tendency to get sun bleached and it really does look bad. I don't really want my washing in the sun (i know that's crazy but i would rather the wind dry my clothes!) - or for the clothes to be visible to guests I am also getting a heating duct installed into my laundry for drying clothes in winter!!! Close the door and it's like a sauna in there - but a great cheap way to dry clothes - better than the crazy electricity bills I'm getting now for being a dryer junkie - if I'm already running the heater in the cold weather I'll be killing 2 birds with 1 stone!!!! Apart from the fact that I don't have room for a HH. I had to find one that was wide enough to fit sheets (unscrunched) on the line, which I did. I have 36m of line space, it's double decker and I can fit 2 1/2 full loads from a 7.5kg F&P top loader. I love it, and it gets plenty of sun and breezes where it is (North side of house next to the HWS). I just have to do something about the mud underneath after it rains! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... We got one of the internal wall mounted ones as part of our inclusions but we'll also be putting up a Hills Hoist in the backyard. They hold more and the fact that they can blow around in the breeze is excellent for drying times. We used to have one of those ones that can fold up and also be taken out of it's spot in the ground. It was fantastic! Re: Hills Hoist in plain sight of living areas: yea or nay? 19Feb 16, 2010 1:03 pm Gambarol Go the Hills Hoist.
