Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 14, 2010 2:12 pm Hi, I'd like advice about the best method to fill in Plaster Air Vents, in Cement rendered walls. I figure either Cover over with plaster or cement render. After having first filled the hole left behind after removing the plaster thatch. Any Ideas ? Cheers. Re: Fill in Air Vents 2Feb 14, 2010 3:43 pm Hey Salinesurfer, We just filled over the vents with plaster, didn't bother removing them as they were flush with the walls. The vents in our house had a metal gauze on the back so this kept the plaster from simply falling through the hole. Once done we just sanded it back lightly and painted over the top - now you'd never know! Re: Fill in Air Vents 4Feb 20, 2010 12:24 pm I have read that the air vents in the bottom of walls below the level of the floor are VERY important to prevent dampness in the crawl space there. If that gets damp your joists might rot as will your floorboards. My crawl space was really damp but i ripped up the carpets and opened the termite access points and it has since dried out. But I don't know whether you need the air vents in the top of walls. They seem to just let in a lot of dust. Mould had grown on one of my walls so I, too, am hesitant about bricking up and plastering over the air vents there. Can anybody on the forum say what they are there for? There must be a reason or the builders wouldn't have put them in in the first place. Re: Fill in Air Vents 5Feb 20, 2010 9:47 pm Sub floor exterior vents are important and shouldnt be covered up... The high wall vents in bedrooms etc were put in houses years ago when gas space heaters were used to make sure there was ventilation and wre regulation back then but are no longer mandatory in todays homes. They are not in modern homes and are not needed in houses where ducted heating etc exist but still can be good for ventilation.. I have been told to fill them up to make the room warmer by simply filling the grooves with no more gaps... Re: Fill in Air Vents 6Feb 24, 2010 12:24 pm thanks, charli73 i've had advice from an old hand who said the top vents were still important but i don't know - they let in dust and noise and if i get the company that is double glazing the windows to double glaze the vents it will cost a bomb, when i can just chuck a brick in and render over the top for free.... retail its around double the price of a similar sized actron/dakin system from memory, They are excellent systems though. But with how builder gouge on AC/heating, you… 4 13787 2 4351 yeah i couldnt picture it issue either, but i could clearly picture what they were doing wrong haha 2 5295 |
