Re: How to make a bed taller? 3Feb 13, 2010 10:39 pm I don't think people are using any sort of special mattress risers, I'd say it just comes down to the style of bed they have chosen. Many contemporary designs are quite low to the ground, with clean lines. If you check out your local furniture retailer (or do a search online) and look at some more traditional styles you should note they are much higher off the ground. My bed is so low to the round I can't even slip my shoes underneath, whereas my parents own a bed that's so high off the ground you almost need a step ladder to clime in. Re: How to make a bed taller? 4Feb 14, 2010 12:52 am Well I read a book on this. I think it was by Roald Dahl? called The Twits. They glued little bits on the end of a walking stick each night and Mrs Twit thought she was shrinking because her walking stick was getting taller. You could do as Onc suggested but as long as one of you knows what is going on there will be no shocks Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: How to make a bed taller? 5Feb 14, 2010 11:03 am Our bed is quite high, I know this because my nephew needs help getting on top of it Ours is a Sealy Posturepedic or something, which has the base on wheels and then the mattress. And the mattress has the pillow top also. Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Our Crazy Owner Builder Journey! Bricks! lol, sorry but the subject matter just brought that to mind first. As for actual helpful information, sorry I cannot help. Re: How to make a bed taller? 7Feb 14, 2010 11:54 am I think the pillow top on our mattress added quite a bit of height to our bed. Otherwise, you can get bits of wood that go under the legs to make it higher. I've used them often for people who can't get out of a lower bed, so they're stocked in Home Healthcare type places. I always called them bed raisers but I'm tipping Onc's bed sleeves are the same thing. I reckon you could probably make them yourself though, they are literally just bits of wood (maybe with a bit of a lip so the bed doesn't slide off?) Building on an acre in Macedon ......one day. Re: How to make a bed taller? 8Feb 14, 2010 6:30 pm More money = higher bed. Well, looking at the beds during the recent sales with a purported 40% or more off for the beds (Sealy), we noticed that the more expensive the bed, the thicker the final cover over the mattress to the extent that the sales person in the bed area warned us to check the height of the sides of the fitted sheets to make sure they fitted. We were able to save LOTS of money! Good-bye to the water bed that my wife had 20 + years ago when we met. We need something that is easier to get in and out of now that we are 'more mature'! When we move, in the next week or two, into our new house, we will not need to reassemble and refill the bed. Re: How to make a bed taller? 9Feb 15, 2010 7:29 am Its usually the slats are higher so the mattress sits higher. Eg http://www.fortywinks.com.au/bedroom-fu ... =1&image=2 this is a bed style we are looking at. Its got that lip around the edge and we are having it made so the slats sit only slightly below. This would mean the mattress would sit only just under the edge of the bed and you can see pretty much the whole mattress sitting on top of the bed frame. Is this what you mean? Or are you talking about an ensemble with a thick mattress (usually due to the pillow top) Re: How to make a bed taller? 10Feb 15, 2010 12:21 pm There are lots of ways to make a bed taller. If it's an ensemble, you can simply use longer legs. We have a collection of legs from ensembles we've had previously and they vary in height. Our current ensemble is VERY thick - so it's a highish bed even with very short legs. If it's a mattress sitting on slats on a bed base, then usually it's a relatively straightforward job to drill extra screw or bolt holes to allow the brackets holding the base to be raised by the required amount. If all else fails, buying a thicker mattress may be the go.... Cheers zeke Re: How to make a bed taller? 11Feb 15, 2010 1:04 pm I wanted height for under bed storage and looking around couldn't find what I wanted, so I made a new frame from scratch, as having a double bed in a 3.5x4.0m room isn't condusive to lots of available storage. We raised it so it has about 45cm under the frame. its a fairly simple steel construction, took a couple of weekends including the design, cutting welding and painting. Cost all up was around $200 in materials. So yeah just one option to consider.
