Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 14, 2007 8:10 pm I am loooking at puting in a ducted vacuum system and as per usual Im running out of time. Our house is fully framed so I need to choose a system and get it put in ASAP. So does anybody know of a good brand model and price? We are also looking at getting a security system and audio intercom for the front gate with door release so if we can get altogether even better.
Thanks in advance for any help Re: Ducted Vacuum System 2Aug 15, 2007 10:14 am My dad used to install the Vacumaid brand back in the late 70's = They came with 2 year warranty on the motor and were the leading brand back then - Imported from USA - not that I think that is a good thing
Check the models around - Look for an Ozzie made one - there is on here now - Better support options and should be a good unit. Personally I installed a Vacumaid in my place - at the right price - in the early 90's - but a very good price helped me decide on that one So whatever brand - I'd look for these features. No dust bag. I don't like having a dust bag - my mate has an in-built with a bag and it's as bad as a portable for clogging up. So I'd look cyclone dirt capturing bin with a dust filter that can be cleaned. Make sure it has a very Powerful motor -2hp or there abouts. Make sure the vacuum pipes are highly polished and smoother inside than normal pipes. Go for a 30 foot or there abouts house and the less points the better but don't get ridiculous 3 is normal for a normal house - plus an outlet in the garage on the unit to help clean the car Wall fittings - I'd look for ones that have a micro switch that the hose pushes in versus the electrical contact type - Some systems have a metal tab on the hose that joins to contact pads on the wall fitting - these tend to fail over the years as durt and dust grind them away - again I have seen this at my mates place. Also in the wall fittings make sure they use nice smooth elbows and not jammy little tight things as they tend to get things stuck in them more. and mount the unit in the gragare of out of the house and vent it to the outside and preferably into a manifold to make it nice and quiet. Also make sure the unit is on the lee side of the house (in summer at least) so the prevailing breeze does not blow the dust back into the house when you doing the clean with the doors open Hope this helps. Good luck and if you're at frame stage - you'd better get cracking Cheers Steve Re: Ducted Vacuum System 3Aug 15, 2007 12:01 pm Good advice there from Yak Chat!
I'm not sure about brands either, (Godfrey's have one) but concur that a cyclonic unit is worth looking at. Get the biggest, most powerful one available. Take pedantic care that the person installing piping is meticulous in ensuring piping is clean internally, with no dags or obstructions. If you can, be there to see so, as once it's in, it's in. There's one chance to install piping carefully. Make sure that the unit is positioned to avoid exhausted dust is not re-introduced into the home. Also, look up previous conversations here on the topic, using the search function. Ash. Re: Ducted Vacuum System 5Aug 15, 2007 1:25 pm Cheers!
A thought comes to mind here....... I wonder if folk can get the components, and fit it themselves? The issue of making sure piping is installed correctly would be dealt with, as if the owner knows how important it is, no tradey will install it as carefully as the owner will themselves. In general terms, I'm a strong advocate of NOT trying to DIY, in favour of having a competent, experienced professional. But this may be an exception. Of course electrical wiring must be done by a licensed sparky, but if a DIYer got professional advice on how to DIY, it may be a good option. Anyone heard if DIY kits are available? Ash.
