Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 10, 2010 9:34 pm Or what are you budgeting for it? When I say furnishing your home I mean, lounges, tables, chairs, oudoor furniture, bar stools, coffee table, bedrooms suites, TV's, washing machine, dryer, art and so on. Just the main large things and not including kitchen appliances or small appliances you would get at kitchen tea. We have been around to Domayne, Harvey Norman, Natuzi, and King Furniture and come to the conclusion that we will combine our furniture from these 4 stores...... What did you spend or what is your budget? How big is your home? This is what I am thinking: Approx 26sq Budget approx 37k - am I way off or on the mark? Re: How much did you spend on furnishing your home? 3Feb 10, 2010 9:41 pm buzz I'm the ikea queen, so I spent.... probably.....in the vicinity of.... $16.75. All up. OH Ikea, I love Ikea but not for the 'main' stuff. I bought a wonderful glass bowl salad dish there for $4, and some glasses for $6 and they are still in tip top shape. Im going to get all my outdoor glasses and plates from there and not to mention all of the other cute stuff. DA approved Waiting on a few more Builder's quotes. Re: How much did you spend on furnishing your home? 4Feb 10, 2010 10:06 pm Hi mandystoj, I'd be happy to spend the $37k for you In all honesty though, $37k is more than enough, provided you're not looking at having things custom made by Versache. I'd do a little more hunting though if I were you, the big retailers are great if you just want to go out and buy everything in one day, but if your happy to do the leg work there's some great bargains to be had. There are some excellent online retailers, many of which have showrooms you can visit. In Sydney I frequent Glicks Furniture at 7a Danks St in Alexandira (www.glicksfurniture.com.au) for pieces that won't break the bank. A little pricier Complete Pad in Mosman (www.completepad.com.au) are excellent. I bought a 2.2m x 1m Marble top dining table from them and it was delivered to Newcastle for just over $2k. Moss furniture had the same table in their showroom at St Leonards (on the pacific hwy) for over $3k! If your not fussed about seeing the items before you buy then milandirect.com.au have some good replica pieces and deliver Australia wide. Re: How much did you spend on furnishing your home? 5Feb 10, 2010 10:21 pm Thanks for all that info Ikon Interiors, we do want a few custom made things (not by versache ). I cant wait to go shopping!!!! Wow thats awesome about the table! We have (not happy to admit) bought our 1.5mx1.5m dining table coz it is absolutely gorgeous and couldnt resist the savings (down to $1800 from $2500) but still gotta find some nice chairs for it. We havent even chosen a builder yet DA approved Waiting on a few more Builder's quotes. Re: How much did you spend on furnishing your home? 6Feb 11, 2010 7:38 am Do you have no furniture at all now? If you are going to buy it all at once you should be careful not to make your house look like the display floor at Harvey Norman. Personally I would spread my purchases wider than you are indicating, all those stores are very mainstream and "similar". $37k sounds like enough but it does get eaten up quickly. Spend most on your impact pieces like lounges and dining settings and bed fixtures. If you can squeeze it in, buy a couple of bespoke or unique peices that will lift your place above the "Freedom Furniture" look. We do have a Plasma, and 1 bedroom filled and a dining table so far. The dining table and bedroom is in boxes not used but plasma is being used atm! We are lucky as we can tell our close relatives what to buy for us for a present for the house so I presume atleast the dishwasher, fridge, dryer, outdoor furniture, main bedroom suite and alfresco furniture will be paid for which doesnt leave 'alot' left to buy. We also thought about not getting it all from one place (even though the discount would probably be good!) but I think the 4 will be spread out enough. Re: How much did you spend on furnishing your home? 8Feb 11, 2010 8:45 am If you haven't started building yet I would suggest you wait until you're well into your build before you buy any furniture. I was always fairly into minimalistic things but I found that during the building process and when I was researching what I wanted, my likes and dislikes (especially dislikes ) changed a fair bit. Also, before you have a final room plan of the house you want, you won't know what will fit where. Just a few names that changed my taste from what's there in the shops to a different level: Poggenpohl, Boffi and Varenna for kitchens, Poliform and MissuraEmme for furniture. Top class and top dollar but I got a lot of inspiration from these. They all have websites. Re: How much did you spend on furnishing your home? 9Feb 11, 2010 9:09 am mandystoj Approx 26sq Budget approx 37k - am I way off or on the mark? Its hard to say. Our appliances - fridge, washing machine, dishwasher and 2 tv's cost 24,000. 2 lounge suites and a bed cost 10,300 Thats almost your budget there and we still need coffee tables, dining table & chairs, TV units, office furniture, 2 x kids bedrooms, small appliances, rugs, lamps etc etc etc. If you shopping at the stores you listed then you are probably going to go way over budget. ETA - I just read your other posts and you havent even found a builder yet! - I wouldnt even be THINKING about furniture now. Once you start the process designing the house you might find that you want to upgrade and use your extra $$$ on that. Also furniture trends go in and out and appliances turn over every 6 months so looks and prices are going to be differnt by the time your build is nearing an end. Unless of course you are one of the rare ones who have a build turnaround of 3 months!. My parents build has taken 2+ years and ours is over a year now. Very similar for other people in our area too. I'm not including appliances in my budget for the kitchen at all or any small appliances (nothing in the kitchen as I will get it all from the kitchen tea). Just the main large things - not even rugs or decorative stuff (I know I said artwork but I mean expensive artwork). But like I said I'm thinking I wont need to pay for the laundry things, main bedroom or the outdoor furniture and I have a TV, dining table and spare bedroom sutie. So my budget is around 37k for only for 2 lounges, 2 coffee tables, 3 bar stools, 1 TV, 2 TV Units, 1 bedroom, chairs for dining table. If I wasnt having any other help/presents I would agree it wouldnt be enough. I'm pretty sure the kitchen appliances (like you said, would be nearly my whole budget ). I'm thinking that will be more than enough for all that. Lounge1 - 8k Lounge2 - 3k Coffee Table - 1500 Coffee Table - 800 Chairs for Dining - 3k Bar Stools - 1500 TV - 4k TV Unit1 - 2k TV Unit2 - 1k Bedroom - 2k 1 Art - 1k Thats only around $28 000 If I had to buy it al and got no presents. Washing machine- 1500 Dryer - 1k Outdoor furnutre - 5k Main room - 4k Just on budget hehe. DA approved Waiting on a few more Builder's quotes. Re: How much did you spend on furnishing your home? 11Feb 11, 2010 11:26 am mandystoj Approx 26sq Budget approx 37k - am I way off or on the mark? I dont think anyone can possibly answer this question for you. How could they? When I first set up house it cost me less than $3 000, for everything. Because it was all from ebay/trading post, except for the washing machine. This all depends on whether you're buying brand new or second hand, whether you honestly think you need to buy everything at once and furnish every room, whether you buy leather or fabric couches, whether you're obsessed with brand names, and most importantly- how much debt you're willing to get yourself into. How can anyone else answer a question that ultimately comes down to- what are you willing to spend? But I worked hard for them - no expectations for expensive presents from friends and family here! I would never spend that kind of cash on those things, but absolutely each to their own. Work hard for it, you deserve it Re: How much did you spend on furnishing your home? 16Feb 11, 2010 1:51 pm When we set up our first home (onto our 2nd now) we owned NOTHING as like you we were both still at home. Our first place was only 10sq so we didn't bust the bank furnishing it. My advice is do your homework. Wait for sales - the mark up is huge! We did a combo of shop purchases and custom made pieces. If you shop around even custom made can be cheaper than the shops. Also, if you don't have kids yet and are planning on having some soon, I wouldn't go overboard with pieces for the rooms that the little munchkins will be frequenting! As much as you can be proactive in teaching them to look after things there are always accidents. You can spend a fraction of your budget yet still have your house looking classy - it's all in the research. Here is a breakdown of what we spent on our first place (remember it was only 10sq). We will be keeping most things for our new place and just adding the extras we need as our furniture is only 4 years old (going from 10sq to 30sq). Leather lounge suite from Plush - $1,800 (special) Custom coffee table - $300 Custom TV unit - $500 Wool rug from IKEA - $120 Floor lamp - $90 (special) 8 seater dining table from Freedom - $900 (special) 8 dining chairs from Freedom - $1,000 (4 were floorstock at clearance price, 2 were full price) Buffet/Console - $500 (special) Custom Bedroom (king bed, mattress and 2x sidetables)- $5,000 (saw something for $15k so found someone who copied it for us) Bedside lamps from Laura Ashley - $600 1 X LCD TV - $1,500 (special) DVD player etc - $300 Washer - $800 (special) Fridge - $1,300 (420lt special) Outdoor furniture - $500 (special and small) BBQ - $500 (special) Office Furniture - $500 Dishwasher was already in our house. All up we spent just over $16,000 The only thing that has been damaged since the little miss arrived is our coffee table but as you can see it didn't cost us much (and i was never happy with it anyway!) Also, thank goodness we bought leather couches - sticky fingers just wipe away! I think allowing $37k is more than ample for a 26sq home especially since a good chunk of things will be bought for you!!! - if you spend wisely you will hopefully have some change from it to do the garden or even better, take a holiday! One last thing, don't splurge unless you absolutely love it - it's easier to replace something that didn't cost too much when you get sick of it than if it cost a fortune (you will feel so guilty parting with it) FYI this is what we will be budgeting for our new home (keeping in mind we already have stuff and also not including small stuff and accessories): Family Room: Casual lounge suite - $2000 Coffee Table - $500 TV - $2000 Unit to sit under TV (will be hanging TV) - $1000 Decorative arm chair or 2? - $1000 Lamp table - $500 Dining: New buffet - $2000 Kitchen: Bigger Fridge - $2500 Laundry: Dryer - $500 Outdoors: Outdoor setting 1(saw something I want) - $3000 Outdoor setting 2 - $1000 Formal Lounge: Sofa - $1500 2 x decorative arm chairs - $1500 Coffee table - $1000 Lamp table - $500 Display cabinet - $2000 (plus the baby grand piano - maybe in 10 years time haha!) Family room No 2/kids playroom: will use what we already have and add some kiddy stuff Main Bedroom: Keep everything. maybe add a decorative armchair or something. TV: $1000 Bedroom 2: Big bed for little miss: $1200 Side table: $400 (will keep some of the stuff she already has) Bedroom 3: will stay empty until we need it for a future sibling for little miss! Study: ????? will have to be custom made due to hubby's things (will house office plus hubby's musical equipment - marshall amp, 4 guitars, recording equipment etc) Re: How much did you spend on furnishing your home? 17Feb 11, 2010 4:01 pm LOL don't want to answer this question!!! I moved in owning nothing more than a Bed and TV hehe. Appliances were covered by gifts and I got myself a King couch......worth EVERY cent (and there's a lot of cents hehe) Otherwise the place is empty. I can't afford to furnish everywhere and won't do cheap stuff just to fill the space so it will be a loooong work in progress! Re: How much did you spend on furnishing your home? 18Feb 11, 2010 6:32 pm At the moment we have a brand new flash kitchen but to afford it we are still using a $20 dining table and chairs that were a second hand bargain and watching a free tv, one of those old box types that was being chucked out by the people down the road and sitting on another free very old sofa. Our partly renovated house has zero decorative touches so far. I dont even go into homeware stores at the moment as we are still saving to finish the rest of the house reno's. We love bargains and the house will slowly come together as time and finances allow. Your extremely lucky to have the budget to get it all new and at once. I would just take my time with finding the right furniture because you will have it for many years to come. You will have to share your shopping spree with lots of pics so i can share the shoppers high. Anyway good luck with the shopping. Re: How much did you spend on furnishing your home? 19Feb 11, 2010 9:04 pm There's so much I want for the house but things we need to get (well could wait but new would be so much nicer).... Lounge $4K Lounge#2 ? no more than $2K (not a must yet) Washing machine $800 Fridge close to $3K or even a bit more Rugs- we want at least 1 Bar stools (not a must) BBQ something cheap- $200 max Dinning table $750 Chairs $900 antique and upholstered Outdoor furniture $1000 Bed $1200 & mattress $2500 Bed side tables (don't want to spend too much) Floor lamps x2 $500 Interior lights.......???? costly!!!! Areas furnished when we move in- main BR Study 'guest' room Open plan living and dining area. ..it's adding up pretty quickly. We have been getting things slowly and putting them on lay-by if we can rather than interest free plans. We will probably just wait until we move in so we have a better feel for the house..especially with the lights. This will be hard. Re: How much did you spend on furnishing your home? 20Feb 11, 2010 9:06 pm When we moved in together 24 years ago, our first (rental) place was filled with second hand furniture and appliances - some of it was given to us but most we bought on our limited budget, we dont like credit so it was afford it or go without. We upgraded as we went along - and you sure appreciate things you have earned yourself I still like a bargain and enjoy getting value for money, brand names or fancy styles has never been my thing 7 11984 Thanks mate.
