Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 10, 2010 1:14 pm Hi, I would like some help with a question about the eaves of my house. It was built in 1988 in Sydney and was wondering if it contains asbestos. It has been water damaged and have mound and water mark so I was thinking of sanding it back and then paint it, but not sure of it contains asbestos. Do I need to sand it back prior to painting or just paint over it? What kind of paint is suitable? many thanks fo ryour help/ Steve Re: Question on Eaves of the house 3Feb 11, 2010 4:53 pm According to this link http://www.asbestos.act.gov.au/identifying_asbestos.html it probably does not, however it would be borderline and who knows if older stock was used that does contain asbestos, I wouldn't take that chance either way. I would be more inclined to prime/seal it then top coat it without sanding. Re: Question on Eaves of the house 4Feb 11, 2010 6:39 pm It would be safe to use a wet-cleaning/scraping/scouring method to remove the mould..... the aim of the water would be to avoid getting fibres into the air. You should be careful with the disposal of scrapings and any potentially contaminated abrasive material. Cheers zeke. PS Obviously it would be cheap to buy new material to replace the stuff. However, the labour involved may make this impractical. Hence the above opinion. BTW, the information that the eaves lining shouldn't contain asbestos is perfectly correct. However it's wise to take precautions due to the remote possibility that old stock or even second-hand material was used. It's also worth noting that the phasing-out of asbestos was gradual and even very old stock in 1988 could hardly be expected to contain the real nasties such as crocidilite (blue asbestos) Update from me! Couldn't find the trimmer - not sure if there isn't one simply because the eave is so narrow. Went ahead with the spring toggles and it all worked out… 7 5869 The two 15mm holes are obviously not compliant. The Dept of Fair Trading would love to see this one! Do the gutters pool water after it stops raining? Although it's… 4 7859 You can really use anything you want the main consideration would be how it looks once painted/finished - or the look you want. Cabinetmakers use MDF because its cheap… 2 9960 |
