Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 06, 2010 9:21 pm My new house is down wind of a HUGE lemon scented gum tree. It's dropping tons of leaves, twigs and bark right over the roof, so to keep the gutters clean of this debris I'd have to clean them very often, at least once a month. It's too much hassle and I'm looking for some other way of keeping them clean. Any advice/recommendation?? I've got a brochure spruiking Blue Mountain Mesh ? any comments/opinions on this product ? Blue Mountain Mesh any good ?? 3Feb 07, 2010 11:01 am I've installed this system a number of times. I think it's about the most expensive of all the gutter guards but for retro-fitting it's easily the best, for both tile and iron roofing. please don't go near any of the plastic mesh options, they'll cause you more frustration than you need. in Adelaide there's a product called fielders "Watergate" http://www.fielders.com.au/pdf/FIEL7943 ... ro_WEB.pdf in my experience this is the best value for money and my preferred system. it does however have some potential problems / difficulties with retro-fitting, depending on roof type and over hang into gutters. good luck Land settlement 4 May Building contracts signed 27 July Slab pour 26 March Frame started 10 May Bricks start 31 May Roof & Gutters Start 31 May gyprock 1 July Kitchen & cabinets/tiling 19 August Second fix plumbing 15 September Second fix electrical 22 September PCI 28 September viewtopic.php?f=31&t=29155 Re: How to protect my gutters ?? Surely sooner or later one would have to remove it to clean the gutter? Arfur Re: How to protect my gutters ?? Working on roof's, I have no problem getting up there and cleaning out my gutters when needed. But! There are 2 kinds of tree's (or the leaves from) that will rust a gutter out quicker than anything else, and they are Gum tree's followed by Pine tree's. Considering your house is down wind from a gum tree I'd be doing some thing.... I hate saying it (but ask my boss..) "trust me" I try to talk my way out of installing gutter guards. The choice is between forking out $$ for professional gutter cleaners every few months, or pay $$$$ up front, for an uncertain solution. I wouldn't mind that, if I could be certain that those $$$$ are spent on something that works. I understand the thinking you mention But having been to many places that have GG, and removing them to clean out the detris underneath, that has built up and blocks the flow of water to the down pipe, I would be thinking the cost to get a gutter snipe( a young person ) to do a cleanout for say $30 a time, unless you have an extremely LARGE house. The cost of the GG and installing it would see you 'in front' for a lot of year into the future. by giving a gutter snipe $30 twice annually.(even 3times P/A) ...if you collect the water, then don't install GG and have rank leaves and detris water going into you beautiful harvested pure rainwater.(I saw the rain water tanks ) We have more trees than you could poke a stick at and there is NO WAY I would consider GG yuk! Re: How to protect my gutters ?? Blue Mountain Mesh any good ?? 11Feb 09, 2010 8:03 pm We lived in a very large home on 5 levels surrounded by gum trees in the Adelaide Hills for 30 years. Over the decades, I used various types of gutter guard in different areas of the house. The metal ones were NBG until I siliconed everywhere they joined the gutter and the tiles. This made them a PIA to remove when this occasionally became necessary in a few spots. Overall, I preferred the plastic ones as they could be removed by simply unscrewing the tek screws on the trim that attached them to the gutter. Yes, a lot of fine crap built up in the gutters over the years, but they lasted 30 years without rusting through and we were only using the rainwater on the garden. In the new place, we installed the plastic GG on all sheds and the house, based on our experience with the old house. I'd appreciate if "building aimlessly" could elaborate on exactly what sort of frustration I can expect. I probably should hose out the gutters periodically to prevent the fine gunk building up, but I'm in the same age group as the OP and it might not happen. We'll see........ Cheers zeke Re: How to protect my gutters ?? Blue Mountain Mesh any good ?? 12Feb 09, 2010 8:34 pm onc_artisan Can I ask have you had a quote for the GG? If so how much was it? I've had a few ballpark figures from various brands/suppliers. For a single storey, with approx 60 m of gutters they range up from the minimum (supply only) of $1500. With install it's approx $2200+. I've found that the plastic gutter guards that you fold into the gutter become loose and allow debris in, filling and clogging the gutters. I also think they look untidy. All gutter guard systems will not work unless fitted to the entire gutter line. any areas where there are gaps or unguarded spots will allow stuff get in and block your flow. This is just my opinion on what I've seen and fixed over 11yrs as a roof plumber. have i had gutter guard on any of my houses???? no.. Yeah, the ones you fold into the gutter are a joke - totally agreed. The ones I'm talking about are attached to the roof with little saddles at every corrugation and to the top of the lip of the gutter with colorbond angle strips. And, yes, you have to do all the gutters. Whatever their problems might be, they certainly won't let any particles more than about 2-3 mm into the gutter. It's not a great look, I suppose. However I saw a very attractive house that had this installed a few weeks after construction. To me it looked good as it said "no need to clean gutters here" Cheers zeke Re: How to protect my gutters ?? Blue Mountain Mesh any good ?? 17Feb 15, 2010 8:46 pm Thanks everybody for your opinions. My overall impression from this forum and from talking to the suppliers/installers is mainly for those fancy gutter meshes. I'm dragging DW to the Homebase Expo on Saturday (need someone with lotsa common sense with me ), they've got 2 such systems on display there. Then we'll talk some more to the installers and get quotes and if our budget can bear it, we'll get it. I didn't also excpect the problem to be that bad, most of the trees in the vicinity are gone.
