Browse Forums General Discussion Re: What is the height of your Ceilings? 21Jan 30, 2010 8:28 am We've gone for 2590mm so 8.5' in the old money. Upgrade was a couple of thousand over the base 8' /2440mm the builders standard was. The display house was 9' and whilst it looked good, we didn't like the huge gap above the kitchen cabinets (as it is we've had bulkheads added to fill the gap). Also we didn't like the varying heights of doors, some were standard, some were 2340. And the builder didn't have options available for full height doors. The same for the windows, the costs of increasing door heights and window sizes to compensate quickly made the exercise prohibitive for our budget. Iirc the upgrade from 8.5' to 9' was another 2.5k, to upgrade all the interior doors was about $700. Then taller entry doors etc were another 1k or so, then the windows on top of that. We think the proportions still fit at 8.5' without the need to make all the changes because as previously mentioned with 9' or above a 2.1m door looks a little out of place. On a side note though, my sister has just finished building over in Southern River, WA. And we constantly had discussions regarding heights as it seems over here in the east everyone discusses heights in either ft or mm, whilst over west (probably due to them being double brick) they tend to talk in the number of brick courses. To me mm is better as at least i can measure it once the plasters on Our Build - Places Fairhaven 23+ - https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=28045 Our Landscaping - Belial's Backyard - https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=45375 Re: What is the height of your Ceilings? 22Jan 30, 2010 8:30 am We have a curved roof and the ceiling at the highest point would be close to 5 metres. I like the look of it but it's also true what zeke said - we have no idea how to get up there to clean - so just haven't bothered so far . It's nice and cool on hot days, hardly need to use aircon, but heating is an issue. Even our hydronic sometimes can't cope, and I like to be warm. Re: What is the height of your Ceilings? 23Feb 01, 2010 10:17 pm We are building and have gone for 3m downstairs and 2.7m upstairs. 2.7m is ample enough for most purposes. Our current home has 2.7m ceilings. We went for 3m downstairs because we have a large very open living space and wanted to make the height one of the features of the space. Going for a 3m ceiling has some flow on effects other than just the direct extra costs - all of the door heights increase from the standard 2.1m to 2.4m which increases costs. All of our external doors downstairs are 2.4m. We have considered having standard 2.1m for internal doors only but we are most likely to stick with 2.4m internal doors for downstairs. One consideration for ceiling height is the market for your home should you decided to sell it in the future. Ceiling height is not so important if your home is a standard home. You dont want to spend money needlessly. But if you are building a premium home in a premium location then you may want to carefully consider your ceiling height. It comes in our upgrade package anyway. We looked into going to 9', but after checking out some display houses that came in the 8'5", we coudn't notice a huge difference. Didn't really feel the need to pay a few extra thousand for a difference I had to actually look for. Plus adding on the cost if we want higher grade bricks, you gotta pay more, same for alfresco extension and so on Land Deposit - 18/12/2009 Became a land Baron - 21/12/2010 Site Start - 27/1/2011 All moved in!!
