Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 27, 2010 11:57 pm How best is it to cover my cottage cheese ceiling. What products (brand name) - plaster/render would work? The area is about 28sqm. How would I estimate the cost? Gyprock may work, and would a celing fixer/company quote and complete this type of work for me? Re: My ceiling is concrete with a thick layer of cottage cheese. 2Jan 28, 2010 1:26 am Ahh what I fondly refer to as "spitball ceiling" My old unit had this, and it was grey, so I just painted it white (with a spray gun). Can't help with what you're after, sorry! Good luck! Re: My ceiling is concrete with a thick layer of cottage cheese. 5Jan 28, 2010 10:57 pm My ceiling fixer husband reckons it'd probably be a pull down job. Your ceiling height cant be lower than 2.4m by law so putting in a suspended ceiling may not be allowed - and it'd be pretty expensive. Re: My ceiling is concrete with a thick layer of cottage cheese. 7Jan 28, 2010 11:29 pm Yes the technical name is vermiculite. It looks gorgeous!!! I love it so much. Spitball, popcorn, cottage cheese, sound proofing, I have heard those terms for it. The cheery names still doesn't make it go away. Re: My ceiling is concrete with a thick layer of cottage cheese. 9Jan 29, 2010 12:31 am I have no cornices, just brick walls that meet the ceiling. The vermiculite is just on the ceiling. Ceiling height looks about 30 course. It seems higher than 28c.

Re: My ceiling is concrete with a thick layer of cottage cheese. 11Jan 29, 2010 1:08 am No shadow lines around the edge of the top of the walls! Aren't I lucky It is a very flush joint/angle from the walls to the lovely vermiculite. A lot of lint from my dryer get stuck on the ceiling. Re: My ceiling is concrete with a thick layer of cottage cheese. 12Feb 01, 2010 1:59 pm Sorry shadow lines are a new(ish) form of finishing gyprocking where there is no cornice. Re: My ceiling is concrete with a thick layer of cottage cheese. 13Feb 05, 2010 3:41 pm Ive seen vermiculite ceilings covered (as someone said) with furring channel and then gyprocked. It lowers your ceiling slightly so you had best find out if this is allowed before you start. An electrician is needed to extend the cabling down for your lights. The vermiculite near the tops of the walls needs to be removed for the cornice fixing. Expensive but permanent, especially if you have cracks, like in Casa2's photo.
