Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 27, 2010 1:57 pm Hi, As our plans stand at the moment our electricity box is around the corner from the front facade. Our gas meter is also around the same corner but further in on the other side of a set of french doors. We are intending to use this space as a 2nd alfresco/courtyard hence the french doors (runs off our formal living room) and plan to fence this off from the front. We asked the builder to move the gas meter to sit under the electricity box (we plan on fencing off just behind the meterboxes - don't want to get estimate readings) but we have been told that we cannot move our Gas meter as there needs to be 1m between gas and electricity and also something about it being a certain distance from corners and openable windows/doors? So our dilemma is that if we leave it as is we will have to accept the fact that 1. it is in our nice fancy courtyard area and 2. we will get estimated gas readings. Is this all true? Where do your meterboxes sit? My in-laws built about 5 years ago and they have both boxes together in a discreet location - have the laws changed? We are in Melb. Re: Meterbox locations and laws 2Jan 27, 2010 3:32 pm i would have thought (like they do for the telstra point) is that it needs to be within 1m of the elec box. This makes it easy for the person to find and read. However I dont think there is a hard and fast rule appart from being able to get access anytime of the day. Also being away from the corner makes it harder to hit with machinerary etc. Re: Meterbox locations and laws 3Jan 27, 2010 7:20 pm Our gas meter is directly under one corner of our meter box, so I think your builder is telling you pork pies. The meter box is maybe 1m from the front corner of the house, the gas meter slightly further (1.3 to 1.5?). And there's a window immediately round the corner on the facade. It's very handy - the Telstra box is right there too, and we've just hidden them with a nice timber screen that makes them invisible from the footpath, but accessible to the utility companies. At the moment they have the electricity box on one side of the french doors and the gas on the other side. I think it is stupid!!! We will investigate this further and question it with the builder. I have also been trying to find info about this online but so far there is nothing. Re: Meterbox locations and laws 5Feb 02, 2010 1:36 pm Hi there Check with your future gas/eclectricy supplier as they may be able to give you clearance and location guidelines. If in WA you can go to http://www.wagn.com.au/docs/WAGN%20Mete ... 081020.pdf good luck Re: Meterbox locations and laws 6Feb 02, 2010 4:12 pm I'm pretty sure there are regulations, but the distance is usually measured from where the gas point is in your land. Its the same for water and electricity. The meter itself should not really matter. Hope this made sense I recently went through a similar renovation and move scenario when updating our family home.
