How bizarre other things to consider in the costing: The old fabric needs to be removed and carefully so not to damage the frame - that could be very time consuming There maybe hidden work required It is a one off job that needs to be customised to your couch, (ie no learning curve that you would get from a production line or other economies of scale) As mentioned you are paying a local wage. For the premium you are paying you get a much wider choice (style, fabric, trims etc) and most likely greater craftmanship. Thus unless the item has significant setimental value, or is a high quality structure sadly it is more economical to throw away and start again. Re: Re covering a couch 6Jan 27, 2010 6:10 pm Depending on the style of the couch, you could have a go at it yourself. I re-covered a pair of folding two-seaters years ago when I was young and poor and couldn't stand the hideous orange and green fabric on my free lounge suite any longer. It turned out OK - but the couches were quite square, with timber arms and legs and I was able to unscrew the whole thing and use basically one piece of fabric for the front and one for the back. They were rather like this, only without the buttoning: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ It might be worth a try if you're going to chuck it anyway. You could experiment with calico or something else cheap first to see if it's easy to do before spending cash on decent fabric. Another alternative - again, depending on the style - is to see if you can get a loose cover made to fit. Re: Re covering a couch 7Jan 27, 2010 7:26 pm I've just bought 6 dining chairs off ebay to get reupholstered in a fabric to match our couch exactly. We were told it will cost between $30 and $70 per chair. Each piece has to be manually fitted and tailored. It may also need re-springing and re-padding. It is quite an expensive venture. Judie Oh, glad I'm not getting a couch done then Re: Re covering a couch 10Jan 29, 2010 7:30 am I re-upholstered our dining chairs (just the seat part) and it is very easy, just requires two pairs of hands at times to stretch the fabric evenly while the other staples! I have loose couch covers on the couches on my family room, which cost me about $100 for 2 from Spotlight several years ago. They are the micro suede material and I throw them in the wash every now and then. The couches are 13 years old, and although stucturally they are in excellent condition, the blue and whilte 90's check doesn't go with my decor, and I can't afford to recover, or buy new ones. Loose covers were the easiest and cheapest solution! It requires a fair bit of tucking in and straightening almost daily (thanks kids...), but the fact that they are washable is a bonus! A thought, anyway? Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!!
