Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Skylights - Clear or Glazed??? 2Aug 06, 2007 5:08 pm I got two glazed ones... they are nice. People mistake that for light and look for a power switch to turn it off
How does the clear one look? Can you see everything inside? If you can then that wouldn't be nice. Re: Skylights - Clear or Glazed??? 3Aug 06, 2007 5:49 pm Turns71,
I think the difference in heat gain would be negligble as the sun would be shining onto the silver of the tube and not directly into your house. Check the location to make sure it doees not. The clear ones normally have a diffuser in the ceiling therefore it is really the amount of light getting in that will be different. The diffuser also helps the light spread left and right - but some of the tubes do that these days too. My neighbour whose roof is below my floor level - has a clear skylight and I can see the light shine up from it at night, but I can't see inside their house But maybe if I jumped on the roof and looked straight down I could - but given we can hear if a possum on our roof what's the chance of a human sneaking a peek Re: Skylights - Clear or Glazed??? 4Aug 06, 2007 8:44 pm We recently replaced the skylight in our bathroom when we renovated. The skylight follows the line of the pitched roof, and there is a recessed well in the ceiling, ie no additional flat ceiling diffuser or light tube etc.
We were going to go for a clear (colourless) one (no privacy issues around here, except maybe possums) but we were advised against it by the supplier as the clear ones let in more light, and this could possibly result in UV damage to interior surfaces. So we opted for the opal one instead. You can still see blue sky through it on a clear day, and the natural light is fantastic. As an added bonus, I won’t notice if it’s not clean I suspect the semi-opacity of the opal finish assists in deflecting some heat, but the material is also an important consideration. Our skylight is acrylic, and glazing or double glazing would probably perform better in terms of keeping heat out (and in). But in our case, the skylight is on a south-facing pitched roof and as such does not receive direct sunlight. Re: Skylights - Clear or Glazed??? 5Aug 21, 2007 3:00 pm Thanks for the replies, I think I'll go with the clear given the pitch of my roof for all 3 skylights is south facing. Privacy never crossed my mind I must say! The skylights will be 500mm x 500mm, so probably not enough opening for direct sunlight to hit the floorboards below. I’m in a similar position except I’m after sliding 3 stacking doors. I am on a second-story apartment of which the balcony would not adequately fit any bi-fold or… 5 16077 I don't know them all, the first 2 top of your list are best known.
