Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 18, 2010 1:24 pm I am talking about Gecko's. They are driving me absolutely crazy at the moment. I know i am not the only one who has this problem, so i want to know how you get rid of them or if you can't how you live with them. First of all i need to clarify the meaning of 'Getting Rid Of Them', i do not want to hurt/kill them i just want them to go elsewhere. I actually don't mind having them outside or even in the garage as they keep the bugs down but i am sick of having them inside the house. They are cute and all but they crawl over everything, especially my own Fabric Wall Art that i have up on the walls ( not the pieces i sell as i keep my fabric in airtight containers and once pieces are made i wrap them up in glad wrap to keep them from getting dirty anyway). They leave their business all over the walls and everything else in their path. Not to mention being told by the electrician that installed our air con that they get inside the outside unit and can short them out. So i am thinking what can they do to the electrical equipment inside the house. OMG i am over them. We had a few outside at the house that we rented which was literally about 200 metres from where we live now but they never came inside. Help what can i do??? Re: Do You Have Them At Your House & How Do They Affect You???? 2Jan 18, 2010 2:24 pm Funny that you should mention that, just last night wandered in to the bathroom in semi-darkness and saw what I thought was a cockroach (they were out in force last night after a 42 degree day) scuttle away. I turned the light on and grabbed some toilet paper to dispose of the interloper but when I moved the object that it was hiding under, it turned out to be a juvenile gecko. I was pretty amused I coaxed him onto my nice warn hand, sandwiched him gently with the other, and tossed him out the back. Thankfully he kept his tail, I was a bit worried that I might have stressed him out. I love the little geckos and lizards we get basking on the bricks, but I'd imagine that they're annoying when you start finding them in your house all the time! Re: Do You Have Them At Your House & How Do They Affect You???? 3Jan 18, 2010 6:15 pm They are great for keeping the insects at bay and I love their little chriping sound (i used to think we had a birds nest in the roof) but now I'm worried if they can affect the electricals. Just curious - I dont remember seeing them around as a teenager. First time I heard one was about 6 years ago - have they been recently introduced?? Re: Do You Have Them At Your House & How Do They Affect You???? 4Jan 18, 2010 6:28 pm They're native geckos that are endemic to southern Australia, from Vic to WA, so they've been around for awhile http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christinus_marmoratus Re: Do You Have Them At Your House & How Do They Affect You???? 5Jan 18, 2010 8:22 pm I remember seeing the odd one here and there over the years but not like this. I was reading today that there are the native Australian ones and then there are the Asian ones that have somehow got here. The Aussie ones are brown in colour and the Asian ones are the ones that are opaque or nearly see through. Well this is what i read so i do not know how true it is because the only ones i seem to see are the opaque ones. I was watching them on my kitchen window the other night, watching them catching the bugs etc, i mean they are cute and i do not mean them any harm but they drive me crazy here at the moment. I also read that they do not like Dettol, so i have made up a mixture of dettol and water and have sprayed it all around my kitchen window this arvo to see if this helps but i think it has attracted more of them than usual. Oh i don't know, i just wish they would stay outside then i would be more than happy to have them around, as long as they do not get into my Air Con and my outside SPA, that is also my other big concern. Re: Do You Have Them At Your House & How Do They Affect You???? 7Jan 18, 2010 10:05 pm aww i won't mind at all but my Dh would freak too. He's not so good about bugs, insects and creatures that belong outside. I tried to interest him in staying somewhere a little more balinese when we go to Bali later this year but as soon as I mentioned the possibility of geckos in the bathroom he wasn't even willing to discuss it. sigh. Re: Do You Have Them At Your House & How Do They Affect You???? 8Jan 18, 2010 10:14 pm Insects I can understand, most people are at least a little repulsed by them, but geckos? Geckos are the teddy bears of the lizard world They're soft and shy, and they get rid of insects and make cute little chirrup noises! Hating geckos is like hating puppy dogs Re: Do You Have Them At Your House & How Do They Affect You???? 9Jan 18, 2010 11:07 pm I love 'em, yep teddy bears of the lizard world I love the noises they make. I can spend ages watching them stalking insects at night with a cold beer. Well I have the beer, not the Geckos very relaxing There is a Gecko forum! Lets hope this Gecko hating thread doesn't show up there Re: Do You Have Them At Your House & How Do They Affect You???? 10Jan 18, 2010 11:17 pm Re: Do You Have Them At Your House & How Do They Affect You???? 11Jan 18, 2010 11:34 pm The Cambodian and Thai locals looked at me funny whenever I cooed "Ooooh! A gecko! Hi little gecko!" and then pulled out my camera! (admittedly I did this more often that any sane person probably should've!) All the geckos must go there on their overseas holidays too. Local holidays, the just drop by Maurita's by the sounds of it My tac-home-ter: Been in 8 months! Re: Do You Have Them At Your House & How Do They Affect You???? 12Jan 19, 2010 4:07 am Geckos give me the creeps When I lived in Qld they came into the house all the time and I was too scared to walk past them...one of them decided the toilet was a nice place to hang out...guess who too afraid to use the loo that night! No idea on how to stop them coming in the house, I hope you find something that works. Vundaful! Hating geckos is like hating puppy dogs I dont like puppy dogs either Re: Do You Have Them At Your House & How Do They Affect You???? 13Jan 19, 2010 6:13 am The thing is i am not scared of them, i even quite like them but i just don't think they have a place being inside my house all the time. I tried to take some photos of them last night and each time i was just about to take the photo they would scurry off. I don't see why they are attracted to the inside of my house anyway because i have screens on all doors and windows and all the bugs/moths are outside where they can get a good feed. Ah once again i am stumped, oh and thanks for the article Vundafull, the one thing that might make them move on is for us to get a cat but i am allergic to cats so that is not an option unfortunately. Re: Do You Have Them At Your House & How Do They Affect You???? 14Jan 28, 2010 8:17 pm Gecko Update. I was reading the local newspaper today and found a big feature on Gecko's and how they are invading home etc. The Qld Museum is doing a study on the various breeds of the Gecko and want people to do a 5 minute survey. Do you think i did the survey, you bet ya i did. If anyone else want to do it here is the link, http://www.southbank.qm.qld.gov.au/learning/nsw/geckos/ Re: Do You Have Them At Your House & How Do They Affect You???? 15Jan 29, 2010 9:02 am I really miss them TBH, perhaps you post them down to Vic for me. They were certainly much nicer than termites, GIANT spiders and snakes that lived in my yard. http://burbankascent2500.blogspot.com/ https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=28503 [url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/] HOUSE COMPLETED IN 119 DAYS PCI Complete Handover 24th August Re: Do You Have Them At Your House & How Do They Affect You???? 17Jan 29, 2010 10:56 am What about a cat?
