Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 14, 2010 2:48 pm hi, we've got some cane chairs and I want to stain them to dark chocolate. I first tried to apply a deck stain we got directly on it, but found the stain don't absorb as well as what i tried on a bare timber. THen, i bought the Wattyl stain gel, this time I sanded the surface with a sanding paper, but still result is similiar. after my husband found out his sander, i tried again, but still the result is not as what i tried on a bare timber. So, what should i do to successfuly stain the chair/ It seems more difficult than i thought! Thanks a lot. Re: Not successful with staining the chair 2Jan 14, 2010 2:52 pm Hi Nott, can you post pictures? I've never heard of anyone attempting to stain cane furniture before Re: Not successful with staining the chair 3Jan 14, 2010 2:57 pm For a stain to take to wood, the wood needs to be completely bare, if it has had a coat of something on it previously, you will have to strip or sand all the existing coating off, then stain it, otherwise you can just buy a 3 in 1 undercoat and paint it a solid colour similar to the stain colour you want. It won’t look as good as if you stain it, but it might just do. I recently painted a wooden fish tank frame a brown colour to match a wood grain laminate, had to paint it because the wood was in a bad way and staining would have looked atrocious, now it looks pretty good. Sanding would definitely be a painful process. Re: Not successful with staining the chair 6Jan 14, 2010 3:21 pm kek think commercial paint stripper is the go. Definitely, just need to make sure you remove ALL the paint stripper, which can be quite difficult on cane furniture Current status: Busy making the house our home Built PD Francis 29 on our 576m2 block at Reflections in Tarneit Reflections Estate Thread Our Build Thread Re: Not successful with staining the chair 7Jan 14, 2010 3:31 pm this is the chair. http://i402.photobucket.com/albums/pp108/nottch/stooltransform1.jpg This is what i just tried before the post. http://i402.photobucket.com/albums/pp108/nottch/DSCN4966.jpg Re: Not successful with staining the chair 8Jan 14, 2010 3:38 pm Yeah, the chair has a clear coat on it that needs to be removed first Current status: Busy making the house our home Built PD Francis 29 on our 576m2 block at Reflections in Tarneit Reflections Estate Thread Our Build Thread Re: Not successful with staining the chair 9Jan 14, 2010 4:04 pm I really haven't painted any cane thing b4. I tried to paint a timber chair sometime ago, but i believe it needs one more coat cos the previous coat is too thick and i don't have thinner at that time. Re: Not successful with staining the chair 10Jan 16, 2010 4:12 pm as previous posters have said you need to remove the clear coat first before staining. Stain is meant to penetrate into the wood but it cant because there is a clear coat barrier so all you are doing is smearing the stain onto the clear coat. It all needs to be stripped off and then you can stain it. Re: Not successful with staining the chair 12Jan 16, 2010 6:47 pm I have used some wattyl stain and laquer all in one, only needed to lightly sand the old desk and draw and then "painted" this stuff over it. Worked brilliant, saved loads of time and it still looks perfect after 5 years. Bunnings sell it if you are interested.
