Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 13, 2010 4:02 pm My apartments ceiling is concrete so there is no way I can have downlights without installing a false ceiling. What is the minimum drop that’s required for a false ceiling where downlights are going to be installed?? The ceilings about 2.5 or 2.6m from memory. I’m worried if the ceilings reduced it will look way low. Thanks!! Re: False ceiling & downlights 2Jan 13, 2010 5:26 pm Nic, I have the same issue. In my case it's a new two storey house with a suspended concrete slab. You should choose your light first. Some light fittings only require about 75 mm of space and that's mesured from the bottom of the ceiling. My current favourite is R80 downlights, but these require 130 mm of clearance, which really starts to chew into the room height. If you went for 100 mm space (measured form the bottom of the ceiling), you could probably get the vast majority of downlight fittings in there. Anyone out there install downlights for a living? Would like to hear your input. This will ensure the heat is direct out into the open rather than back into the cavity. You will still have to ensure though, that the manufactures specifications regarding cavity hight are maintained. Hope this helps!! Thank you @ashington Homes for your reply!
