Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 09, 2010 8:40 pm I have a great builder and have my plans of what I would like to do with building a home office under my house. Above I have floor boards and 5 kids.lol so I want to in some ways soundproof the room. The builder recommended soundproofing insulation? Also I need to board up a few areas that will get some weather on them just to seal the room in a bit til I can afford to fix it. I know MDF is no good what can you recommend? Thanks Re: Soundproofing of a Home office 3Jan 10, 2010 6:45 pm Depending on how much room you have will determine what you can do. The best option would be to install completely separate walls and ceilings, this creates an air barrier that sounds waves cannot directly vibrate through. What I have commonly done where noise is an issue is to build double walls between room with a 20mm gap in between, or where space is more restrictive used a 90mm top and bottom plate then stagger 70mm studs so there is little direct transmission possible. The second best option is to use physical insulators like sounds insulation and noise reducing gyprock such as sound check. I hope this has given you the information that you are looking for. Re: Soundproofing of a Home office 4Jan 10, 2010 8:11 pm Thanks for the idea of separate roof. I ended up finding some Powerscape Assurance Boards for sale on Ebay for $4 a sqm which is great for me. This is a 16mm thick Impact Resistant, Fire Resistant, Moisture Resistant and Acoustic interior lining board that is mainly used in Commercial Specialty wall systems. It normally sells for in excess of $20.00m2. Assurance is manufactured by a special patented process utilizing recycled gypsum & refined cellulosic fibre by USG (United States Gypsum). The special process gives the product exceptional Impact resistance & durability as it does not have a paper face like conventional plasterboard products. I needed about 40 sqm and it will end up costing me about 200 delivered so not too bad.
