While I don't have an answer, I'm curious to know too, as our build starts soon and we've chosen a colorbond roof as well. I am curious too, as we are having a cb roof. What a bizarre response from your ss! Re: ??? colorbond roof - laid the wrong way ??? 5Jan 06, 2010 7:02 pm The tradie is right, sheets that are laid into the prevailing wind are more prone to leaks as the wind drives the water under the overlaps. I can't recall where I saw it, I'll have a look through the building code tomorrow. Obviously in some cases you can't avoid it so I think you need to increase the overlap but not sure. Andy Re: ??? colorbond roof - laid the wrong way ??? 7Jan 06, 2010 7:32 pm Dylan Which direction is the prevailing edge facing? ie east, south etc the southern side ie (rear of house),the prevailing edge faces (west) and the the western side ie (sea side of house)the prevailing edges face south. The front ie (northern side) and eastern side of the house the sheets are laid correctly away from the prevailing wind but !! There is hardly any wind on these sides of house ,the rain, strong sometimes gale force winds nearly always come from the coast ie (south ,south south west, and south westerlys. Andy Hi Andy, don't mean to bother you but did you look through the building code by any chance? My ss really thinks that it doesn't matter which way the roof is laid. How do you get the "building code" ? I've lokked through a few different sites but to no avail Re: ??? colorbond roof - laid the wrong way ??? 9Jan 09, 2010 9:52 pm Hi issy jo, The building code states that 'wherever possible have the sheets laid so that the side lap is facing away from prevailing weather. Thats clause 3.5.1.3 (d) (iii) (B) from volume 2 So if you were laying a roof from left to right, so you lay your 1st sheet on the left, then the next sheet over that one etc the prevailing weather comes from the right, if that makes sense. Andy Re: ??? colorbond roof - laid the wrong way ??? 10Jan 11, 2010 7:29 pm Thanks a bunch Andy!!! I'll let you know what my SS says about this one! He's said some doozies!! I should start a new thread about the waffle that has come from him when answering my queries on certain building matters. Just cos I'm a chick, and a wee bit blonde at the best of times, I mean, really!! Re: ??? colorbond roof - laid the wrong way ??? 11Jan 11, 2010 8:16 pm Hi Issy just thought I'd make a comment on this... I'm a roof plumber in Adelaide and thought my expertise might help put your mind at rest, somewhat. As a rule we always try to lay sheet with the laps away from the prevailing weather. sometimes this doesn't happen for one reason or another. ie, aesthetics or design.. In ten years of roofing i can only recall hearing of corrugated sheets leaking from the laps on one occasion, that being on 5 degree pitch and the laps being the wrong way. 10 degree's is the minimum pitch for corrugated iron and the fact that this roof was laid at 5 degree's probably had more to do with the leak than the laps facing the weather. Didn't you say your roof was 25 degrees. even though the standard suggests the sheet are to be laid with the laps facing away from prevailing weather i don't think anything will be done unless you find there is a problem.... It's easy for me to say but i wouldn't worry to much about it. if you have any questions feel free to ask good luck Land settlement 4 May Building contracts signed 27 July Slab pour 26 March Frame started 10 May Bricks start 31 May Roof & Gutters Start 31 May gyprock 1 July Kitchen & cabinets/tiling 19 August Second fix plumbing 15 September Second fix electrical 22 September PCI 28 September viewtopic.php?f=31&t=29155 Your house roof does not show rusting other than some surface rust on the flashings.
