The 2 lt bottles last longer before they fill up and need disposing of. I had the shop-bought version in your first photo and quickly found you had to site it as far away from the house as possible due to the awful smell. Empting it was definitely a dreaded task, , hence it hasn't been used since. With the home-made version you could simply throw it all in the bin instead. My BIL uses prawn heads as the attractant in his now instead of buying the powder and says it works equally well. He lives on a small acreage so is not likely to offend any neighbours with the smell. Re: Gross but effective fly control ( includes photos ) 3Dec 30, 2009 11:36 am That's great!! How do the fly's not just fly out again? Or did you put some silicon to narrow the gap in the 'lid'? Also, I know someone who has a similar thingy and they use liver for the bait - after a week of camping it's digusting! 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' What prevents the flies from crawling/flying back out of the hole? And... Does the smell attract flies from ... just the ones hanging around your own backyard? Or is it attracting flies from all over the neighbourhood?? Would there be a way to counteract the disgusting smell?? viewtopic.php?f=31&t=22766 - my build thread! Time waits for no man. I just cut the top off a 2nd bottle (leaving the cap on the first bottle) and put a little slit in the side of the first bottle and then poked the funnel of the 2nd bottle through it. You can then open the lid of the big bottle and pour in the bait, screw the lid on again. No silicon needed. http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg89/leah6363/fruitflytrap.jpg edit- added piccie www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Gross but effective fly control ( includes photos ) 8Jan 01, 2010 7:44 am We had one of these in our yard as well - they worked well, but I agree, they smell horrible. We used Vegemite and orange juice. It seemed to work even better than the pre packaged stuff. Stefan Building the M3tr!con Liberty 42 at Stonecutters Ridge. The New Build Blog - "Life, In Progress."
