We are living in an old rental house while we build it is set out on farmland and somewhat retro in its style to say the least. We have been having a plague of earwigs and millepedes appearing in the house on a regular basis they were coming up through the floorboards from under the house. The house is on low stumps and has skirting round making the underneath almost inaccessible. After some thinking I bought some Pyrethrin insecticide concentrate and mixed it as per instructions in an 8 lt pump pressure spray bottle adding a little detergent to reduce surface tension and so allow the mix to kill millepedes . After setting the spray nozzle on the finest mist setting and wearing protective clothing and mask ( while Margo was out too ) I then placed the spray nozzle and our powered leaf blower together and stuck them both under the house. The blower very effectively spread the midst of insecticide under the house and after inserting it in a few locations round the outside I was pretty sure I had covered the entire area. The effect was almost immediate from about 10 to 20 bugs in the house every morning down to almost 0 in a few days. While I would not recommend anyone doing this especially in suburbia or if you had pets or children about it was an effective end to a really icky annoying infestations Re: Rest control ( Thoroughly NOT RECOMMENDED : ) 4Dec 26, 2009 4:42 pm Good thinking! Pyrethrum is a pretty inoffensive remedy anyway. Bugs hate it, but as far as I know, it's not toxic to humans. Re: Rest control ( Thoroughly NOT RECOMMENDED : ) 5Dec 26, 2009 7:06 pm kek Pyrethrum is a pretty inoffensive remedy anyway. Bugs hate it, but as far as I know, it's not toxic to humans. It's certainly one of the milder ones but natural pyrethrum can be irritating to asthmatics, synthetic pyrethroids are stronger and some are residual, and pyrethrin insecticides contain other ingredients that might be problematic, eg synergists. That ad that shows all the lovely natural green things floating around protecting your family makes me shudder. Of the available chemicals, pyrethrin is probably a good one to use when you have a problem but I have a bad feeling about the idea of constantly misting your homes with it as a preventative. I hate the idea of a constant low dose of any chemical Put up fly and insect screens rather than pump more chemicals into the environment unnecessarily. I am one of the F111 deseal reseal guys, I am doing OK but a lot of others have had their lives destroyed by what we were told were harmless chemicals. I've read about that. Terrible. It was the things we did back then. The job needed to be done and yes they should have taken more care of us but it happened. What gets me going is 30 years later they are still arguing over compensation and health care. My question has always been "If somehow a dangerous and toxic chemical as released in Parliament House affecting our MPs Senior Public Servants and their families do you think it would take 30+ years to do something about compensation ?" I have often asked this question to parliamentarians and so far not one has given a direct answer. Re: Pest control ( Thoroughly NOT RECOMMENDED : ) 9Dec 27, 2009 2:10 pm PS I only just noticed this was titled "Rest control" not "Pest control" A problem of being a dyslexic P and R look exactly the same and spell check does not know the difference Re: Pest control ( Thoroughly NOT RECOMMENDED : ) 11Dec 27, 2009 3:04 pm I'm horrified at the ads on tv for mortein timer mist sprays that mount on the wall. Shudder at the thought of it! In our home, if there's one fly or roach or whatever that finds its way inside, its time for WAR! Everything is put on hold as we get out the fly swat and complete our mission to eliminate the thing! We might use a quick burst of flyspray at times as part of our arsenal, but dosing the home regularly is just dumb! Ash. Re: Pest control ( Thoroughly NOT RECOMMENDED : ) 12Dec 29, 2009 1:19 am I found leaving moist dark areas such as pot plant bases and a small stack of bricks with gaps fine.. Spiders move into both and the earwigs become breakfast, lunch and dinner. Under the house is a tough one though. I have the same problems with a similar arrangement. They once set up shop under my pillow in the space of a day. Interesting night that. They must communicate a new spot somehow? Perhaps one rolls a number and everyone comes along. There were 30 or so in the bed with me, fresh clean sheets, clean uncluttered room. Amazing stuff.. I will be excavating that corner soon to lower the soil levels and open up the gap. I hope it works... When the walls exceed 30 degrees they flood into the house. I find that digging a hole, nice and deep with a small bamboo rod invited the grey funnel webs in, these guys (gals) do some serious work cleaning up bugs. The bricks and small holes attract the black funnel webs that set up takeaways here and there. Spiders like these might seem to be a pest, but you would be amazed how many live in your garden. 1 every half a meter or less. http://museumvictoria.com.au/spiders/index.aspx Re: Rest control ( Thoroughly NOT RECOMMENDED : ) 13Dec 29, 2009 3:02 am kek  Good thinking! Pyrethrum is a pretty inoffensive remedy anyway. Bugs hate it, but as far as I know, it's not toxic to humans. It's carcinogenic and will never be able to be registered as organic due to that fact. It form the basis of many copies of it made by man. Have a look at all those sprays you buy and what you choose to breath in when using fly sprays and the like. You'll see terms in the active ingredientents small print that end in "thrin". man made copies. Have a look at ant killers, termites sprays etc too The man made synthetic pyrethroid "Bifenthrin" is the possibly the least harmful of the lot to date Not everything from nature is non toxic. The Family Gastrolobiums is used to obtain the poison 1080 which is used to bait the WA forests for foxes and feral cats. One leaf from some plants in that family will drop a sheep. Native WA species of fauna are generally immune but the same eastern states species are not Oleanders are also some of the most toxic plants easily bought and accessible. You never want your littlies eating the leaves of those puppies Re: Pest control ( Thoroughly NOT RECOMMENDED : ) 14Dec 29, 2009 8:46 am Redman Spiders like these might seem to be a pest, but you would be amazed how many live in your garden. 1 every half a meter or less. Garden I can take, but my new house is full of them. Hoping once I move in and the missus is taking care of the cobwebs more often that it won't be such a problem in the house. Saw a big black one with a body the size of a 20c piece quite comfortably resting above my meter box, the missus almost bolted! I can live in harmony with them as long as they a) don't bite me b) don't spin their web across the bloody door way so i walk through it!!! I was tempted to get someone to spray the house etc but its pointless as you just have to keep doing it and there is no way I want to be surrounded by any more chemicals. It's a side door to the laundry area. Only has a security door.
