Do you have any pics? Louis Pasteur Vegie garden: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=27637&start=0 My Backyard Adventure Re: Converting roof space into attic 3Dec 24, 2009 9:35 am Prefabricated roof trusses are designed for roof loads...one is the static weight of the roof and the other is wind loads. With the former the loading can be quite heavy for roof tiles or quite light for colorbond. With the latter the worst load is generally an uplift load where the wind is trying to peel your roof off. What does this mean? None of these loads are consistent with the purposes of an attic - dead loads from (things in the attic) and live loads (human occupancy) all acting downwards on the bottom horizontal member (chord) of the truss. So the truss would need to be redesigned (yes...that means an engineer) and strengthened. Strengthening could mean propping from below, increasing the capacity of the bottom chord, additional vertical members between the top and bottom chord, redesign of truss end connections, to worst case scenario a purpose built attic truss. So IMO a general cost is impossible to provide without a professional assessing the capacity of the existing truss and how the roof system "works"....every job will be different. And Lisanne is correct if your house is younger than the structural warranty period that came with the house modifications like this will void the warranty...which is why you need to be careful about installing an attic ladder...if that's your intention than the builder needs to design the trusses accordingly. However, if you have an old hose that has a Pitched roof then you are in luck and the load on these roofs are transferred through bearers on onto internal load bearing walls.
