Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 21, 2009 5:52 pm Hello everyone, just found this forum. We have just bought a 13 acre rural block in WA. We have never built before and have decided to go with plunkit homes. The block only has power up too the entrance, we need to take it about 150-200m into the block up to the building zone. Any advice on cost, hiring of equipment etc would be most appreciated. We plan to do it ourselves. We will also need water tank and septic waste tank installing. Hope to hear from anyone with any advice at all. Re: builing on rural 13 acre block - laying electricity cables 2Dec 21, 2009 6:07 pm I hope you are a licensed electrician, its illegal to do it yourself and can incurr a fine, $10,000 from memory. If you did it yourself you cant get power connected without a certificate, Unless you know someone who would sign off on youre work? Re: builing on rural 13 acre block - laying electricity cables 3Dec 21, 2009 10:32 pm I'm in Vic so prices could be different. Pretty sure you could dig the trench yourself to save money ... but not that much! Mine was about 60m in from the road and cost about $3,000 (into an existing box). Septic was about $7K for a waste water treatment system (check what the council will require you to put in ... my council restricted what I could use), water tanks - depends how many/how much water ... I got a 5,000 gallons for about $2.5K - plastic and a 10,000gallon for $6K - colorbond ... the tanks themselves only require a sand pad so don't cost much to install (though of course check if permits required). Re: builing on rural 13 acre block - laying electricity cables 4Dec 21, 2009 11:38 pm Thank you for your comments. Just to reassure you we had no intention of getting involved with the electrics, only to dig the trench. Obviously if we can get it done as a full job for a reasonable price we would rather same ourselves the time and trouble. Any one elses opinions would be much appreciated. Re: builing on rural 13 acre block - laying electricity cables 7Dec 23, 2009 3:44 pm Hi Toby, We do our trenches 600mm deep, and 1m at the starting point where the first connection is. At this point, the electrician should put a bit of sand over the cable followed by a WARNING sign (like the yellow and black warning tape). This will alert whoever goes digging there for whatever reason. In terms of width, anything bigger than 300mm is fine. If you are looking at digging the trench yourself, i'm guessing you have acces to a small digger or will be hiring one? Re: builing on rural 13 acre block - laying electricity cables 10Dec 24, 2009 12:32 am cheers everyone, I am so pleased to have had such a response. My hubby is going to hire the digger and do it himself. Keep any advice coming, also on water tanks (probably going with highline) and septic waste - not got a clue on this one. Also when we dig the trench (wait for it) - where do you dig to when you have no building there to connect to. Merry christmas to you all and all the best for 2010. Hopefully one day, we will have done enough research ( and probably made quite a few mistakes along the way) to be able to offer other newbies advice. Re: builing on rural 13 acre block - laying electricity cables 11Dec 29, 2009 2:00 pm One tip - make a map with measurements of any cable trenches you put in. Put it inside your meter box. This will help you know exactly where they are in years to come when you know the general idea of where they were put but can't remember the specifics. Your water tank size depends on a number of factors; how many in the household, how frequently do you get rain and the catchment area. At our last house on tank water we had a 23,500 gallon concrete tank. This place is on town water but when we knock it down and rebuild we will put in a similar sized tank although will probably look at the colourbond ones over concrete. Concrete does keep the water cool though. We have had 2 sewage treatment plants; a Septech and an Ozzi Kleen. We had a few more problems with the Septech and the alarm was located annoyingly close to our bedroom window - big mistake. The Ozzi Kleen has been great, we have not had any reason to call a technician. Re: builing on rural 13 acre block - laying electricity cables 12Dec 29, 2009 3:36 pm trench needs to be 600 deep x 300 wide .. best to work out what it costs to hire a trench digger/ gettting the sparky to do it... also to save yourself time the telstra conduit can go in the same trench prefeably 200mm above the power but same depth is fine.. and you need to make sure it has the marking tape instlaled too to ensure it is complaiant...
