Re: Question about gables 8Mar 02, 2010 10:12 pm mrsko One of our nearby neighbours are building the exact same house as ours but we have gables whereas they do not. The only thing that I can see is that having gables have given us more roof height. Am I wrong to assume that gables are for aesthetic purposes only? Can anyone shed some light to the pros & cons of having gables? The gable gives you obviously more wall height, the roof height stays the same. (unless the gabled end has been widened). Purely a design feature and creates a different look to the building, particularly when the same buidling is in close proximity to another. Window treatments are the same unless a raked ceiling has been incorporated into the gable end, then taller windows or transom lights may be used. Gables may use overhangs for some shade, however generally window hoods-depending on the style, will provide great shade. Gable ends can also have vents installed to provide roof cavity ventilation. Dutch gables I think in earlier architecture was an ideal means of providing roof ventilation as well. Today they tend to me more for looks rather than the practical ventilation they could provide.
