Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 28, 2009 9:41 pm We recently had a fan put up in our alfresco, it's called a fijian from Beacon. We're very disappoiinted with it because even when it's on the fastest setting, there is very little air movement underneath it. Could it be faulty or is it because of the design? I thought that with the big rounded blades that it would be very effective, but now we are thinking about replacing it with a metal fan instead. Does anyone else have one and how good is yours? Any advice on how to make it more effective or suggestions for an alternative fan would be appreciated This is the fan; http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i60/Hels-b/House/26October5.jpg Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. They often have a switch or button to do that It looks like it should do the job. We have tried that but unfortunately it didn't make any difference Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Re: Disappointed with ceiling fan in alfresco - Any advice? 4Nov 28, 2009 9:52 pm that's me out of ideas then sorry.... at least it looks great wonder if the air just passes through those gaps in the wicker? I'd go back to Beacon and tell them how poor the performance is. Shame, it is very nice. Re: Disappointed with ceiling fan in alfresco - Any advice? 5Nov 28, 2009 10:23 pm Although I must admit it looks awesome... if its not doing its job, tell Beacon about it. We bought a stainless steel one from Beacon for our alfresco... and Ill tell you, it works a treat!! The fan is directly above the outdoor dining, so its very useful and handy in warmer weather. Is it true that turning on the fan prevents flies from coming in the house? (We dont have flyscreens). Mind you, I think having any fan in an alfresco looks luxurious and fancy!! My advice.. get the stainless steel fan!! Re: Disappointed with ceiling fan in alfresco - Any advice? 6Nov 28, 2009 10:25 pm Good suggestion, I will see what Beacon have to say. And I agree - it does look nice and it's a shame to have to replace it S&P - We have a noisy metal fan in our bedroom which hums so we may put that outside and get a new one for the bedroom, I want one that's whisper quiet Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Re: Disappointed with ceiling fan in alfresco - Any advice? 7Nov 28, 2009 10:37 pm For what it is worth I've had a similar fan in the past (in the US actually) and also had disappointing performance. You'd think those big blades would really push some air around. Look nice, but from a performance perspective, not much value. Re: Disappointed with ceiling fan in alfresco - Any advice? 8Nov 28, 2009 10:46 pm Salt&PepperMkII Is it true that turning on the fan prevents flies from coming in the house? Flies apparently don't like turbulence, that's why some shopping centres have air curtains, air blowing down from above the entrances. I don't know how much of an effect you'd get from a fan in a room. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_door Re: Disappointed with ceiling fan in alfresco - Any advice? 10Nov 29, 2009 1:47 am Hels, the best way to find out about fans is this booklet. Go here: http://www.beaconlighting.com.au/catalogues.php and download the booklet "Fans mini". It gives you all the specs (including airflow rates etc) for each fan. Unfortunately, the Fijian only rates airflow of 2.0m3 per second. The fan we have installed in the alfresco is the Typhoon (Hunter Douglas), which has an airflow of 4.2m3. Big difference. If you're going to get a new bedroom fan, can I suggest the Concept (Hunter Douglas again)? It has an airflow of 2.7m3, which is not the highest, however, it is the quietest fan on the market. We've been fine with ours just on "1" so far. HTH Judie Re: Disappointed with ceiling fan in alfresco - Any advice? 12Nov 29, 2009 7:01 am ^ Looks nice. Are those metal or timber blades? Also, do you have a manufacturer and name? Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Disappointed with ceiling fan in alfresco - Any advice? 13Nov 29, 2009 7:43 am We purchased the fan / light combo of this fan from Bunnings for $230. The blades are some sort of re-constituted timber and are reversable. Timber-look on one side and Silver on the other. http://i459.photobucket.com/albums/qq311/EB_Photos_2009/ElectricalFitoff28Sept2009026a.jpg Re: Disappointed with ceiling fan in alfresco - Any advice? 14Nov 29, 2009 8:20 am Hels that is a pretty fan...... i don't see if doing much with the blades looking like that.... We won't move in for a couple of weeks, so haven't used them. Looks like I'd better save some renovating budget dollars to change them for something more effective... I have these fans everywhere Southies, they work fabulously. Hels, we almost put that fan in our alfresco but went with the above instead. I think they are only for looks, which is very nice, but you don't need a great look without performance. Re: Disappointed with ceiling fan in alfresco - Any advice? 19Nov 29, 2009 1:23 pm well hels, I'll let you know when I get mine going, I have similar to yours from beacon, I don't think exactly same... i've got two tho, but their blades aren't on yet because I'm painting alfresco ceiling atm... keep me posted on what you do, I'd be interested (they're not bloody cheap are they!!!)
