Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 20, 2009 4:32 pm I need help quick!! Our tiler started laying our today so we currently have two rows. My hubby and I went to have a quick peek and he is not happy at the gap between the tiles. I was too busy admiring the the tile and thought that from what I saw the gap is fine - its approx 2-3mm some are about 4mm but not that many. Hubby was expecting no more than 2mm as he wanted a very clean look and wants to have a go at the tiler..I dont want to cause trouble so need to show hubby that the gap is normal... What is the grout gap between your tiles?? By the way, ours are 450mm square. Re: For those of you who HAVE porcelain tiles... 2Nov 20, 2009 5:25 pm Our gap is about 3-4mm. I wanted them very close together but our tiler said he wasn't allowed to do them like that anymore due to them looking too uneven. I'm happy with the overall look of ours though. Re: For those of you who HAVE porcelain tiles... 3Nov 20, 2009 6:39 pm Our gaps are 1.5mm, tiles are 600mm by 300mm. Less grout to clean!! Re: For those of you who HAVE porcelain tiles... 4Nov 20, 2009 6:57 pm all the porcelain tiles that i have looked at have 1.5mm gap, ceramic & uses 3mm & slate will be around 5mm go to your local tile supplier & ask them as they would have experiance in this area & would be happy to help you cheers rocket Re: For those of you who HAVE porcelain tiles... 5Nov 21, 2009 3:19 am Ive just laid porcelain tiles in the kitchen/dine and hallway using 3mm spacers on 333mm square tiles and I think they look good. The gap matches that of similar sized sample-board tiles at the retailers where I bought them. Arfur Re: For those of you who HAVE porcelain tiles... 6Nov 21, 2009 7:18 am Erm...I don't have them laid atm but have had 450x450 in a previous house and the gap was approx 1.5mm throughout. I *know* you know this but want to reassure you that one of the reasons we all choose porcelain tiles in the first place is to get the crisp, clean look of tight grout gaps. One of the reasons porcelain is soooo much more expensive to lay than ceramic tile is because of the extra labour involved in achieving this look. Therefore, 4mm would not be acceptable to me. Re: For those of you who HAVE porcelain tiles... 7Nov 21, 2009 8:01 am My tiler finished tiling and grouting my new bathroom and laundry just this week (and did an awesome job!!) I have 300x300 tiles on the floor and 300x600 tiles on the wall, with all grout lines lining up from wall to floors. All gaps are 1.5mm. Re: For those of you who HAVE porcelain tiles... 8Nov 21, 2009 8:35 am Venix, Are your tiles matt or polished? I used to slip all the time on the polished porcelain tiles in the kitchen in my previous house...frankly I think they were a bit of a hazard. You're a braver soul than me with polished porcelain in wet areas...or maybe I'm just a klutz or a chicken Pix Built a (highly) modified Allcastle Maxworth 38.7 in Sydney. Re: For those of you who HAVE porcelain tiles... 9Nov 21, 2009 9:34 am We put polished porcelan tiles in our last house and the builder said that to get them to look perfectly flat like a mirror and butted up close, we would have to pay thousands in laying costs as it takes a long time. I think we had about a 3mm grout gap and they looked fine. It sort of broke it us so the imperfections in laying weren't as noticable, (although there were a couple I would stub my toe on which I wasn't happy about ). Pixelated Venix, Are your tiles matt or polished? I used to slip all the time on the polished porcelain tiles in the kitchen in my previous house...frankly I think they were a bit of a hazard. You're a braver soul than me with polished porcelain in wet areas...or maybe I'm just a klutz or a chicken Pix Lol, no, they do get slippery when wet, so I had a big matt made up from the offcut carpet to put in front of the sink in the kitchen where it would get wet. Helped heaps! Re: For those of you who HAVE porcelain tiles... 10Nov 21, 2009 11:50 am When i layed my tiles i used the gap that would minimize any cut tiles, so they(the cut tiles) stayed as big as possible to match in with the rest. Mine are about 3mm, on a 300 x 600, some bigger as its quite frankly next to impossible to get exactly the same sized tiles, there are always slight variances. Did your hubby specifically say to the tiler before he started he wanted "x" gap?, if not then the tiler is laying them the best way he thinks will work. Did your hubby specifically say to the tiler before he started he wanted "x" gap?, if not then the tiler is laying them the best way he thinks will work. Yeah he did. We were told by the tile store to get them laid 1-2mm apart. We passed this onto the tiler. Re: For those of you who HAVE porcelain tiles... 13Nov 25, 2009 8:33 pm i should have added in my last post : Are the tiles square edged(90 degree) or recessed edge(about a 45 degree bevel)? If they are recessed the gap between the tiles may only be 1mm but the grout gap level with the top of the tile will be about 3-4mm. If square edged then there is no option but to pull up and relay to get a minimal gap. Re: For those of you who HAVE porcelain tiles... 14Nov 25, 2009 8:48 pm I feel sick. We were out at the house today and all the tiles are down but not grouted. They are SOOO uneven. The tiles arent straight and some even have gaps ranging from 5mm to 1mm on the same tile Some are jutting up and you can feel the edges when walking on them. We had my husbands cousin who is a tiler visiting the area with us and he said the job was shocking and should be ripped up... I dont know what to do Re: For those of you who HAVE porcelain tiles... 15Nov 27, 2009 10:49 am From somebody that has been totally ripped-off by a tiler before...Have them ripped up (and or fixed) if you are not happy. You walk on your floors every day and it can really affect you you view the entire house - for me that means I am now building again!). Not sure about the grout sizing (would have to see pictures - but uneven-ness (raised edges) is the worst thing! Good luck and hope you get it sorted to your satisfaction! We had a shocking job done on our last house. There were sooo many that were sticking up, to the point where you would stub your toe on them. I wish we had of noticed before we took the keys and moved in, as it always irritated me. They were polished porcelain, and we paid extra to have them laid, but I don't think the tiler took any extra time to do them. https://form.jotform.com/240284569218058 Please spare a moment to fill out this survey form for a project.
