Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 19, 2009 11:19 am hi, It seems some timber gate ( paling ) have a steel frame backing, but some will not and have the timber at back instead. Is those with steel frame backing stronger, lighter to swing? ( and more expensive?) thanks v much. nott Re: Timber Gate with steel frame backing 2Nov 19, 2009 12:32 pm I haven't seen too many timber framed gates but the advantages of steel are. The frame will not warp with age, rust yes which is why you paint it with a quality rust inhibiting paint. The steel frame makes it easy to weld/bolt hinges to it and they wont come loose like they would on timber and it wont split. I wouldn't imagine that steel would be that more expensive, and wouldn't you rather a gate that still works in a year or two? You don't want to go down the wood frame path. Re: Timber Gate with steel frame backing 4Nov 19, 2009 4:20 pm It depends on the width, timber framed gates are fine up to about 1500mm wide, provided they are constucted properly. After that there is a lot of pressure on the bracing and fixings. Re: Timber Gate with steel frame backing 5Nov 19, 2009 7:13 pm We are getting a steel framed fence & gate. Ie. every panel has a steel frame, bolted to steel posts. With wood panels. The gate itself is the same. Will be super strong and will last a million years (well thats my plan anyway) cost a fair bit extra but it will be worth it! Should have pics in about a week Re: Timber Gate with steel frame backing 6Nov 19, 2009 8:24 pm You can make them yourself - Bunnings has the steel gate frames in kit form. From memory, there are two pieces that slot together to make the appropriate size. Then you just add whatever cladding you like. This is 100% true. You can not hang anything on steel frames. very frustrating 8 5344 Hi I am wanting some opinions about the build of a steel shed I am going to get one about 4.5 x 2.5 m steel shed and the height will be about 2.3-2.4m high The one I am… 0 14434 Hi, I have a steel frame house which was built 2 years ago.
