Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 13, 2009 11:50 am We are signing our contract on the weekend, finally and so colour selection is coming up awfully fast. We had decided on a really pale light brick (Rice by Boral), and dark blue tile roof, but because we are in QLD I am wondering if maybe a light roof tile would be more energy efficient and keep the interior of the house cooler? I prefer the look of a dark roof (and don't have to worry about it looking dirty, if you know what i mean) but want to be practical too. Any advice? Is there any scientific evidence? Kristi Living the dream. 4 horsey acres in the country. What's the next project??? Re: Light/dark roof tiles. Which is better for QLD? 2Nov 13, 2009 12:06 pm no scientifics here... but I have had a charcoal black roof (in QLD) & it was a little hot. But then, we didn't have roof insulation or whirlybirds, or anything like that. It did fade pretty quickly though - to a dark grey. So that might be something to consider. I now have a dark brown roof (can't remember the colour name) & don't find it hot at all. We do have roof insultation, 9 foot ceilings & great air flow through the house... and aircon for the really hot times in qld (can't live without it personally). Ring the manufacturers - sure they will give you an opinion either way. Re: Light/dark roof tiles. Which is better for QLD? 4Nov 13, 2009 5:48 pm Hi Kristi If your roofing tiles are Boral too, there is information on their website that you can download which may help you. It is called a Basix flyer. You will find it under: brochures/technical manuals - Roof Tiles Brochures - Basix flyer. It has information for terracotta and concrete roof tiles in their colour range, showing the solar reflectance, solar absorptance and Basix colour. The products were tested at the University of NSW. Not sure what Basix colour means, you may have to google that one. brokers will also be in a position to get you a better rate than the advertised rate most times. 6 7576 That's a bit of a vague question.
