Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 09, 2009 11:58 pm Hey all, So after installing the new deck lights I also determined that the wood was looking a little tired and worn out. It has been nearly 2 years sine I laid down the decking (Jan 2008) and the original stain has ssen its fair share of sun and rain. I decided that with the weather today being 34 degrees it was a good day to clean the deck and get 2 coats down of stain and have it dry by the time the kids got home from school! Is that Merbau?? Our deck was laid by the landscaper about 3 months ago... but its already really faded and worn out.. Do you think we should clean the deck and restain? What brand stain did you use...is it a natural finish? Thanks!! Re: Restaining the deck.... 8Nov 10, 2009 7:16 pm I would! He may have only put down 1 coat? Personally I would (and always have) used Cabots for my stain. I hear that intergrain is also really good but a few more $$$ I use the stain and the tint is called merbau. The wood on the deck is a 140mm wide merbau. Re: Restaining the deck.... 9Nov 10, 2009 7:34 pm mattwalker I would! He may have only put down 1 coat? Thanks again. Re: Restaining the deck.... 10Nov 10, 2009 8:01 pm The main thing to remember when using an oxalic acid based cleaner is to wash all of the cleaner off the deck. A pressure washer is best for this. The decking also needs to be completely dry before coating. Cabots is the cheaper line made by Orica who also make Intergrain and Feast Watson. I personally wouldn't waste time with it, the Intergrain Naturalstain is a far better product. Its available in a merbau tint. Sikkens which is also available tinted would last 5 or so years in a similar position to that one. I've personally seen it last 7 years on a deck before recoating. Spa'N'Deck is another good product with the benefit of being water-based. Re: Restaining the deck.... 11Nov 10, 2009 8:08 pm matt - great looking resto.. you would have been burning outside scrubbing that deck duke - i've always used napisan to strip the decks, read about it on another forum.. have you tried it? it works well imho Re: Restaining the deck.... 12Nov 10, 2009 9:45 pm Thanks guys XTV4 - I can confirm the napisan...spilt some on the deck and damn it works fast. Duke - If you look closely you can see the karcher in the yellow As for Cabots I hear what you are saying but I have had a really good run with it and at around $60 for 4 litres is pretty good value for money. Perhaps next time I will try the integrain Re: Restaining the deck.... 13Nov 11, 2009 5:41 am Mrs B Looks great Matt! Mrs B Must be the week for it - my husband did our front deck too. It's always nice to stand back and enjoy the results of your (or someone else's ) efforts. Looks great Matt! Re: Restaining the deck.... 14Nov 11, 2009 8:00 am Has anybody got experience with an estapol finish. I have just completed a 65 Sq m deck and would like to get that gloss finish. I have heard that Sikkens Deck plus is a good product, but is extremely expensive at about $160 per 4L (would need 20L at least) Re: Restaining the deck.... 15Nov 11, 2009 5:14 pm Matt have you stained the bifolds and front door??? We dont know if we should stain them yet or not. Re: Restaining the deck.... 16Nov 11, 2009 6:02 pm stu Has anybody got experience with an estapol finish. I have heard that Sikkens Deck plus is a good product, but is extremely expensive at about $160 per 4L (would need 20L at least) You wouldn't use an Estapol on a deck as it will be far too slippery. If you talking about a hardwood deck, the recommended Sikkens product is Cetol HLS at $120 for 5 litres or about $210 for 10 litres - it is good value for what you get. Re: Restaining the deck.... 17Nov 11, 2009 6:04 pm mattwalker Thanks guys As for Cabots I hear what you are saying but I have had a really good run with it and at around $60 for 4 litres is pretty good value for money. Just under 2 years for a covered deck isn't great longevity, though as you doing the maintanance yourself the labour is free. Perhaps next time I will try the integrain The natural stain and ultra deck products made by intergrain are water based, the cabots product you're useing should be oil based I'd keep useing it if you're happy with it, just keep in mind that you cant put a water based decking product over oil. On that note cabots is usually thought of as being the worst stain brand on the market as its a very cheap product but its decking oil is actually quite good I have found. In saying that I've used all brands of all products, best and easiest i have come accross is by far intergrain ultra deck......in my --- (((op in i on ian)))--- < -_-> Re: Restaining the deck.... 19Nov 13, 2009 10:30 am XT4V duke - i've always used napisan to strip the decks, read about it on another forum.. have you tried it? it works well imho Re: Restaining the deck.... 20Nov 13, 2009 1:22 pm I'm interested in giving the Napisan a go! I've got a deck out the front that isn't covered, so it gets the full brunt of every weather condition! Can someone please tell me the amount of napisan I need to water to clean the deck, and any other tips? Sorry if that sounds really stupid, but I'm a newbie at this decking thing, it's my first one I've just built 3 stairs off a landing out the back and been told by the private certifier I need hand rails sorry tried to attach a pic but couldn't mine don't have sides… 5 5744 So I'm just reading up on this ecosystem of lights. I'm planning on putting deck lights along the outside edge of a large deck.
