When i moved into my (rental) home 3.5 years ago the plot next door was a building site as the neighbours were building from scratch. when they completed the work they built a new dividing fence, significantly higher than the original one had been. I believe they went up to the legal limit. It is a very unique position because
a) the entrance to my home is at the side of the building, there is no 'front' door. this is next to the fence, a matter of inches away from it.
b) the path leading up from the street to the door is largely steps as it is all built on a fairly steep hill. the fence follows the slope and goes up in line with the path on the ground.
The fence they built was a couple of inches closer to my building than the previous fence, which has made for a very narrow entrance pathway.
Now, because the fence is so much higher than the old one, there is only a small space left between the awning above my entrance door and said fence. Not enough space to fit any side of a sofa/bed/fridge/desk/armchair etc It is also so high and so close that it virtually blocks the front door in terms of taking furniture out.
Basically, it is going to be completely impossible to move pieces of furniture of any real size in or out of the building. I have a new sofa due to arrive in a few days and I know that they won't be able to get it into the front door as it stands. Beyond this, I have no idea how I will be able to move out when i end my tenancy, and indeed how anyone else can move in.
I was not consulted about the fence since I am only a tenant, but I did raise my concern at the time and was told they were within their rights to build it.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do?
Many thanks!
