I've been told contradicting things. http://www.realestate.com.au/cgi-bin/rs ... 1257495090 Re: How old is my house?? 2Nov 06, 2009 7:58 pm well, I've done a bit of study on Australian domestic architecture (mainly based on Sydney suburbs though). However, to me, your house definitely displays some of the characteristics of the Bungalow style of the 20s and 30s - the gabled front with the ventilator, the exposed roof timbers, the masonry piers & timber posts on the verandah. Inside, the mottled glass in the door and also the fireplace surround appears to be of that era also. There are several ways to determine when a house was built, but one of the simplest is to check through the old council rates books (if they are available in the Local History section of the library) and when there is no longer an unimproved lot - thats when the house was built. Or you can search back through the title deeds also Built a Clarendon 'Balmain' 2008 Re: How old is my house?? 3Nov 07, 2009 10:21 am Well when the insurance company asked how old it was and I said 20s or 30s (because that is what I believe) and then they asked what it was made of and I said fibro she said but that stuff wasn't around back then, maybe it was added on later. Which makes me wonder, what is underneath it if that is the case.. However for risk of asbestos I do NOT intend on removing it any time soon.. There is a bit of bungalow in it though it's not a typical bungalow and in many places they continued on into the 40s. my best guess would be most likely it's 1930s (it could be as late as early 40s and unlikely to be 1920s) Re: How old is my house?? 6Nov 09, 2009 7:46 am I say 1930s. My opinion is based completely on the fireplaces. If your council has computerised all it's records you may be able to strike a friendly clerk who will look up your original building application free Otherwise most councils will give you a copy of the original plans for a small charge. Because you can't tell me someone would have built a house with that kind of * hand basin... And at the back of the house they've closed in a back verandah/sunroom to make a smaller 3rd bedroom. So it was all renovated at some stage. Hence why I still think it is older and has been 'updated' around about the 40s or 50s. Old Home Restoration / Renovation Hi, just discovered all these junks left behind under the floor. Could any of these be asbestos? Best to leave as it is or clean up?
