Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 04, 2009 4:41 pm Hi all Am new to this forum in a sense.... been reading it for a while but only just decided to join up. Wasn't to sure where to post this so thought General Discussion would be a good start. Basically I have bought a two bedroom Art Deco unit (built around 1935) and am looking to do some renovations to it prior to moving in. Now most of the projects I have under control - new kitchen, new flooring, new skirtings, new paint etc. What I am stuck on, and hope I can get some help with is new wiring. What I am looking at doing is the following; Some new powerpoints through out the apartment Moving the current foxtel plate to another area Installing Free to Air TV antenna in Main bedroom and Installing hidden rear speaker cabling for the main room. Now ceilings aren't false so I cant go up. So I guess that leaves the floor or the walls. What would need to be done to utilise the floors? Thinking that would be the easiest option. Could I cut channels in? what would the sub floor generally be made of in a building that old ? Apologies for the War and Peace post Any help or suggestions are much appreciated Thanks! Re: Old Apartment renovations 2Jan 05, 2010 8:16 pm Hmmm, so I assume you are not on the top floor where there is roof access via a man hole ? and it would probably be heritage listed so that rules out running conduit on the outside.... the sub floor should be timber (bearers and joists) how ever ripping these up may be show up more structural damage that you would like to see at this stage and will be difficult to replace with out signs of tampering. I think you best option would be to chase some holes in the internal wall, most probably double cavity brick and internally skinned with render. this can then be patched and painted to hide. Another option is to use a powered skirting, this is a skirting that has 2 groves running along it that carries power for a special power point that can be placed anywhere along the skirting. third option is to use a decorative conduit and give it that industrial art deco look and leave the power conduits exposed. this can look pretty good if done right. either option labour is going to be the killer in these types of reno's so the more you can do yourself will help your bottom line. Good luck Is it possible to render an old corrugated iron shed.I have heard that it can be done if it is covered with chicken wire first. Not sure of the ratio of the render mix and… 0 4890 Thanks Chippy,I do have one that I levered out. I'll try to find a brand name on the windows then do some searching. Here is a photo where you can see how worn they are. 2 7947 Hi I bought an old cupboard that is in desperate need of some TLC.
