Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 15, 2009 3:38 pm Anyone who has built through Porter Davis or any builder and their Gas hot water unit is a Dux Prodigy 3 star,I would like to know whether you had any maintenance issues with it? . My unit is only 16 months old and just recently the gas pilot light kept on going out. so had to get a plumber out to fix the problem, he told me that this is the third unit of this make he has had to fix with the same issue. Unfortunately the particular part was out of warranty. Re: GAS HOT WATER unit 2Oct 18, 2009 11:47 am Hi Clath Yes, this week we have had the unit for 14 months and the problem occured Friday. We have to keep relighting the pilot light as water keeps putting it out. I will ring Dux tomorrow. Did you use your PD plumber? How much could we be up for? Do you live in the South East area. Thanks Anna Re: GAS HOT WATER unit 3Oct 19, 2009 8:24 am My first phone call to Dux told me to find a plumber as it is out of warranty. Rang the plumbers who installed they refused to come out as they insist it is a warranty issue as the inside of the unit has a 5 year warranty. Rang dux back they relunctantly organise a plumber. He rang me back will be here asap and we will have to pay for call out fee and depending of fault parts, He hung up before I could ask how much for call out fee Re: GAS HOT WATER unit 4Oct 19, 2009 10:11 am Well good news The plumber who Dux sent out told me it was the Gas thermostat that was faulty as it was not retaining heat to keep the pilot light lit. The best news of all, it was all covered under warranty Re: GAS HOT WATER unit 5Oct 20, 2009 10:04 pm AJV Hi Clath Yes, this week we have had the unit for 14 months and the problem occured Friday. Thanks Anna You have had a similar issue but i don't think water was putting the pilot out ,Yes live in the south east area. I had mine fixed by the pd plumber charged me $120.00. although he replaced the part but said he couldn't find anything wrong with it,but the pilot lites working fine now Although the heat of the water fluctuates filled the spa up ran out of hot water and had to use 6 jugs of boiled kettle water to get the water hot. Ive complained about that too, for over a yr but they always have excuses. but this time they are going to replace the temperature valve. that's under warranty thank goodness. The best news of all, it was all covered under warranty WOW just read your last post Avg .. so that could be the answer as to why the pilot lite on mine kept on going out and the temp flucuation of my hot water, the GAS thermostat is faulty Thanks will ring Dux also Re: GAS HOT WATER unit 7Oct 21, 2009 7:53 am Hi Clath The water we heard in the inside the tank was the condensation, that's we thought was putting the pilot light out. If the tank had a leak to fix the leak was not warranty if the tank needed replacing that would not be covered under warranty. Except for the labour charge which would be $275.00. Gald it was something else. AJV Re: GAS HOT WATER unit 8Dec 06, 2009 12:13 pm My parents had this problem in month 13 of their hot water system - Dux told them they had to pay a service call... we fought them on this and they sent somebody - thermostat faulty (same as everyone else so far...) they replaced it no charge. Now mine has same problem in month 16 - will be phoning them tomorrow!!!!!!!! No way will I be paying as it is very apparent that this is a known fault. If they know that it is a problem why do they not do a recall or contact owners? Something is terribly wrong with the way this is being managed, or is this a fault that they have engineered to ensure service call revenue comes as soon as warranty is expired (which is what it looks like to me!!! as they try to get service call fee agreed to before they will come) Dirty business and BAD reputation for sure.... would never buy one again after this. Re: GAS HOT WATER unit 10Dec 09, 2009 6:59 am Caromac Thanks everyone...I was looking at this unit for my new build. Will have to look at other options! Cheers, Carolyn Tasmania I would STRONGLY recommend an instant gas rather than storage system, for a number of reasons - unobtrusive simple to replace in the future continuous supply cost is now comparable to storage systems better technology can be installed anywhere lower energy cost Seriously consider them - I will be replacing current one with an instant when I need to, Had one at my last 2 houses and far far better. p.s. I rang Dux on Monday morning around 8.30am - a service guy showed up at 9.15am so that was a pleasant surprise - he was very thorough - replaced the thermostat - also checked tank for leaks (none thank goodness) - ANOTHER GREAT REASON to have an instant!!!! Service was excellent and I didnt pay a cent, but I was very confident on the phone with them that I would not be paying and that I knew it was a fault, and I think that made the difference. Hope this helps others in the future. Re: GAS HOT WATER unit 11Dec 09, 2009 7:04 am Caromac Thanks everyone...I was looking at this unit for my new build. Will have to look at other options! They are 'big' in Japan because they are small in size. And space is a premium there. Rinnai have marketed Instantaneous systems in Australia wonderfully.... even making them 'sexy' with temperature touch controllers. They have made HWS a high involvement purchase where HWS was once very low involvement. In response, Rheem (a Japanese owned company) introduced their versions and others too have followed. However, these systems have big draw backs. They are OK for small homes (great for flats) where space is tight. They are relatively expensive. They don't cope well with high water demands (they will limit the water flow in order to heat the extra volume). There are better systems for local conditions. A mains pressure gas storage hot water system is much better (lower purchase cost too) and a solar bosted gas storage hot water system is even better. With RECS and rebates.... not that costly. I would not install an Instantaneous Gas HWS in my house. Had the builder included it, I would have even paid to have it changed. However, having said all that..... the decision on what HWS to select is not always a rational one. Re: GAS HOT WATER unit 13May 21, 2010 12:20 am I have had similar problems with the pilot light on the Dux 135l H/W systems on N/Gas. One thing that a lot of people miss is that the working supply pressure for these hot water systems is about 5kPa. My mother-in-law just had a changeover of her Dux 135Ltr unit. We replaced a 14year old unit with a second hand one we picked up with the reported problem was "the Pilot Light keeps going out". The original owners had many plumbers come over telling them it was the thermostat and would be expensive to fix. NOT expensive at all – First thing to do is check the Thermocouple – I replace this one anyway – only cost me around $30 from a plumber/gas wholesaler. Next – if you can actually get it lit, usually you will have one go at this in the morning after letting the tank cool down to the air temp. Turn the thermostat to the VACATION position so it will NOT engage the main burner. Go through the instructions to light the Pilot... you may have to slowly jiggle the pilot knob to the on position after lighting the pilot. give it one or two goes and the pilot will probably stay on... once this is done you know the system is running fine. Now... Remember this: when the main burner lights you should have a nice little neat blue flame that sits right on the burner. There should be no gap between the flame and the burner, you should have very minimal flicker in the flame, and definitely no yellow flickers. if the flame is more than about 1.5 – 2 cm the gas supply is probably too strong. Before you adjust your thermostat, locate your Natural Gas inlet pipe and follow it down – you should have an external shut-off tap. Turn this tab very slowly clockwise which should be shutting off the supply. Watch the Pilot light and when it starts to get a little smaller Leave the tap alone. Stand back and adjust your thermostat to a little above the WARM position. Since the tank is cold, you should get Maximum flamage which the unit can give. Look at the flame. if it is very small... slowly open the external gas supply valve a little to increase the flame – ONLY a little... If the flame is roaring then slowly continue to turn the tap off until you get a nice flame as I mentioned above. Once you have a nice flame... you should be able to slowly turn the thermostat down until it clicks and the burner will go out leaving the pilot lit..... turn it back up and the burner will light up again. The Problem I had initially was the burner was roaring and obviously overheated the control unit...you have to then wait till the whole system cools down before you can start again. Most plumbers install these thinking that the thermostat will regulate the pressure but they rarely adjust the pressure on the control box. You will need to read your manual for this. What We have done above is changed the supply pressure externally... If this fixes your problem, I suggest you call a plumber, tell him exactly what the problem is, and get him to adjust the control box accordingly so you can just upon the external tap. Re: GAS HOT WATER unit 14Nov 07, 2012 3:38 pm I got the same unit Dux Prodiggy 3 and had the problem that the pilot light kept going out in first few months after i moved in to the house. I tried many times and finally pilot light stayed on. After 14 months had the same problem and called Dux, they told me that its now out of warranty and they gonna charge $290+ to replace the Gas thermostat. I have read the product review of this model and many people complains the same issue. Iam not an happy customer and never gonna buy this product again.
