Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Phone Trenches, Wireless Internet and VoIP 41May 10, 2009 2:17 pm My partner and I have such great mobile plans that we never even use our landline. We are currently renting but are thinking of not getting a landline connection in our new house. Simply because we see it as a waste of money since we never use it (but still have to pay around $300 a year for line rental). So, my silly question is, is there any way to not pay a line rental but still have a landline number? :S Re: Phone Trenches, Wireless Internet and VoIP 42May 10, 2009 2:48 pm ![]() My partner and I have such great mobile plans that we never even use our landline. As an aside, since it was mentioned on the first page (no idea if anyone has said this though).... I highly recommend a UPS system connected to your wireless/ADSL/VOIP gear. If you don't know what a UPS is... think of it as a battery that kicks into life when the power goes out. This way you can still use your VOIP phone when the power goes out (or use the internet if you have a laptop with enough charge to last the blackout!). Sorry, that was a bit off-topic... but figured it was a good thing to mention! I'm building soon, and I'm also stuck on the phone line thing... as I want ADSL, but know there are zero ports left... so I may end up with wireless. Sigh... decisions, decisions. It is a battery that kicks into life when the power goes out. No imagining required. ![]() Re: Phone Trenches, Wireless Internet and VoIP 46May 14, 2009 3:46 pm On a side note I believe if you don't have a phone line, you will have issues if you want a house security system. Since the system will use the phone line to dial to a security control room or directly to your mobile. Ed There are newer alarm systems that can use a GSM (mobile phone like) device which has a sim card in there that works in a similar way, don't know how reliable this is compare to the old landline. YOu can even have system where you have both and one fail over to the other. The other day we lost our Internet access for a short period. It happens from time to time, even with the best of ISPs! VoIP would go down at such times.
