Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 30, 2009 10:22 am We have a situation that we unfortunately did not realise was an issue until it was built.
Basically our pantry entrance is very narrow and the door opens inwards straight on to a wall, which makes it narrower. If the door opened outwards it would give us a bit more room. (We cut in to the pantry space to allow an "E-Nook" to be made.. ) or perhaps even if it was moved to the other side of the frame/wall where it can open further back ..... am I making sense My question is, it's a metal door frame and the hinges look like they are welded on. My husband says it's not as simple as moving the hinges ... but I thought it would be. Can it be done, or is it a big job that entails a whole new door frame? If it's a big job, I will just shut up Re: Can metal door frame hinges b changed so door opens outwards 2Sep 30, 2009 10:35 am OMG I have this same problem (kind of) with a toilet door I have no idea how it happened but the door just misses the loo by a nostril hair when opened so you have to squish up the side of the loo so you can shut the door, if I could change it to an outward opener it would be fantastic, but my frame is timber. Can it be done? Re: Can metal door frame hinges b changed so door opens outwards 3Sep 30, 2009 10:38 am You need to take a phot and post it here. Hopefully there is enough of a rebate so that the door can close on the other side. There is a small chance it will work. But cant know until you post a photo. Re: Can metal door frame hinges b changed so door opens outwards 4Sep 30, 2009 10:58 am SUH, from my limited knowledge, I think it can be done on a wooden frame as they can chisel out a rebate to fix the hinge. My problem is it's a metal frame and the hinges are welded in to the frame. Me being female asked, well can you just drill a new set of hinges in ..... my husband then explained it's not as easy ... and a heated discussion occurred ... with nothing being resolved I am about to head off to site, so will post some photos of what I am talking about. I would have said the same jaelee, I hope you can get yours changed I know what a pain it is. Will find me a carpenter Re: Can metal door frame hinges b changed so door opens outwards 7Oct 01, 2009 12:04 am Thankyou Borg for taking the time to reply. I took some photos today that will show you how it is now. You have given us a glimmer of hope with the suggestion that they could possibly be angle grinded off. Just another query, we have one door frame that was installed late (it was a Variation) and noticed that one of the hinges is missing. It is a metal door frame again. Is it easy to replace them? Thanks again for your advice. Looking IN Looking OUT Closeup of Hinge Re: Can metal door frame hinges b changed so door opens outwards 8Oct 01, 2009 9:45 am nice views Looking at it it may be possible. The pictures are not exacktly taken on the correct angle. Can you take a photo looking at the inside of the frame if that makes sence? If the rebate is equal on both sides it will be possible. A bit of hard work and larbour but technically possible. Re: Can metal door frame hinges b changed so door opens outwards 9Oct 01, 2009 9:48 am Absolutley it is possible, ask your builder to change it. Or try and find the tradie when he hangs the door and ask him to change it. Re: Can metal door frame hinges b changed so door opens outwards 10Oct 01, 2009 5:43 pm Just picking myself up off the floor.... builder has advised we can change the door to swing outwards but it will cost us $598 Think we will try and work something out after handover. Ouch, It seems to me that they have added their variation fee into that price. Re: $598 to change swing of door 12Oct 02, 2009 11:27 pm cant help with your problem, but hey, nice waterside view! Best to get a second opinion/quote after handover. Gorgeous view Re: $598 to change swing of door 15Oct 04, 2009 8:58 am Thank you for your replies and compliments, we were very lucky to have bought a canal block about 8 years ago before the boom. The frame is bricked in. The cost included $400 variation fee, as they said the plans would have to be changed (funny how they don't change the plans when they make a mistake). We don't have a very good relationship with our builder ... it's been a very long, nightmare build with lots of problems, so we will just forget it at this stage and arrange to get it done ourselves after handover. It appears that all that needs to be done is for the hinges to be removed and new ones put it, the frame can take an outward swing. I can so emphatise with you Jaelee...our contracts were signed back in March 08, building permit issued on 19/9, site start was in the 3rd week of October, slab laid late november & then no action for months & months. Frame commenced in March 09. We are finally coming to the end of our build. We feel like prehistoric animals because our build has taken this long I should have followed up on this thread.
